Inclusive design isn’t a nice-to-have —it’s a must. For decades, the medical industry has inadvertently overlooked women and underrepresented groups. The impact? 🤔 Poorer healthcare outcomes and misaligned device design. Take this: After the thalidomide crisis, women were largely excluded from #clinicaltrials for DECADES. This created a data gap that still affects us today. What can I do about it? 🤔 I can bring together #medtech leaders who are part of the effort to close this gap. Dr. Jennifer Jones-McMeans Ph.D of Abbott, Dr. Shirin Towfigh founder of the BEVERLY HILLS HERNIA CENTER, and Dr. Asha Parekh CEO of Frontline Medical joined me at DeviceTalks West to share their insights and lessons learned. The takeaways? 🤔 💡 “You can’t design for a population you don’t understand,” said Dr. Parekh. 💡 The path to better healthcare starts with asking: Who are we designing for? 💡 Inclusive design benefits everyone—not just the people you focus on but the healthcare system as a whole. Effect of power training on function and body composition in older women with probable sarcopenia. A study protocol for a randomized controlled trial Impact of Power Training on Older Women with Sarcopenia Study Overview This study aims to evaluate how power training (PT) affects body composition and functionality in women over 65 years old who are at risk of sarcopenia, a condition marked by muscle loss and weakness. Background Sarcopenia often occurs due to hormonal changes in older women, leading to muscle atrophy even without visible muscle mass loss. While various exercises have shown benefits, power training has not yet been explored in this specific group. Methodology We will conduct a randomized controlled trial involving three groups: Power Training (PT) Group Multicomponent Training (MT) Group No-Exercise Group Participants will be women aged 65 and older, diagnosed with probable sarcopenia. Assessments will measure body composition and physical performance before and after a 32-week intervention. Each group will engage in three 50-minute sessions per week. The study will utilize a double-blind approach for unbiased results. Expected Outcomes We anticipate that power training will significantly enhance functionality and body composition compared to other exercise forms and no activity. This research aims to advance understanding of sarcopenia, providing preventive measures and practical solutions. Trial Information The clinical trial is registered under ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05870046. Importance of Clinical Trials Clinical trials are essential for developing safe and effective treatments. Our platform, DocSym, integrates ICD-11 standards, clinical protocols, and research to support clinicians in daily practice. Enhancing Patient Care In today’s healthcare landscape, efficient operations are vital. Our mobile apps simplify scheduling, treatment monitoring, and telemedicine, improving patient management and expanding digital services. AI Benefits Using AI, clinics can streamline workflows and enhance patient outcomes while reducing paperwork. Patient advocates are standing up for the bots. When it comes to getting novel healthcare technologies approved and reimbursed, nothing compares to the power of patients fighting to address unmet medical needs and disparities in access. In a coalition letter to congress, 15 patient groups demanded coverage for algorithm-based healthcare services: "While some FDA cleared or approved AI applications are now part of the standard of care...it is essential that these technological benefits reach all patients, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status." "We cannot afford to exacerbate existing healthcare disparities by restricting access to cutting-edge AI-enabled medical devices only to those who can pay out-of-pocket."
