Germany has committed to generating at least 80% of their electrical consumption from renewable sources by 2030 and being climate-neutral by 2045. Achieving these lofty goals requires the newly built energy sources, such as wind, geothermal, and solar power, to be integrated into the grid and the existing infrastructure to be updated. With communities and governmental bodies pressuring the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to find alternatives to overhead power lines and combat the unpredictability of power loss as it travels, their solution is to bury the power cables in the ground in a project known as SuedLink. However, for this project to succeed, there are substantial hurdles they need to overcome. Read the full case study: https://lnkd.in/gnSfh7nd #energy #watercontent #thermalconductivity #innovation

🍃 Clean energy initiatives set for Kent 🤝 There have been a handful of key announcements of new clean energy projects of late, with Kent set to play host to several - including Low Carbon plotting a 500MW solar and energy storage park, and Nautilus. Nautilus was originally set to be built in Suffolk, but Ofgem has revealed the 1.4GW interconnector, which will link Belgian offshore windfarms to Britain, will now come ashore at the Isle of Grain in Kent. 🔗 Read more on the plans, as well as some of the other big stories of the past week, by visiting the story in our comments. #solar #energystorage #netzero #lowcarbon #energytransition

European Environment Agency highlights the critical importance of #grid-level #flexibility, marking it as a key trend in the energy sector. Flexibility solutions are essential for the seamless integration of renewable energy sources, like #solar and #wind. EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and JRC report that #interconnectors are twice as efficient as batteries in providing the necessary grid-level flexibility. FYI, John Greasley Quote: 👉 The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) estimates that interconnectors' relative contribution at the EU level can cover 15% of the daily and 33% of the monthly flexibility needs by 2030. Interconnectors should be thought of when assessing the resource mix. For example, the same study estimates that almost 2 GW of local storage is needed to replace 1 GW of interconnectors (JRC, 2023) 👈 For more insights, check out the link for the detailed document by ACER in the comments.

W E Q U A N T U M The potential role of a hydrogen network in Europe We examine the interplay between a continent-wide hydrogen network and electricity grid expansion in Europe to help balance variations in wind and solar energy supply. By adapting existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport, energy system costs can be reduced, especially when power grid reinforcements are not possible. Both types of transmission infrastructure offer cost-effective options for achieving a European energy system with net-zero CO2 emissions. However, with a 10% cost increase, it is possible to build neither. The start of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine highlighted the need for an urgent transition to fossil-free energy sources in Europe, and the shift in EU policies has accelerated the deployment of sustainable energy systems. However, there are still numerous challenges on the path to the large-scale implementation of renewable energy. In order to ensure Europe’s long-term energy security, we need to diversify the energy portfolio, upgrade the current grid infrastructure, and invest in large-scale power storage.
