I could never kill myself, it’s selfish and a coward’s way out. This is what someone said to me before Christmas. A well-loved and highly respected father, husband, football player and face in the community had died by suicide and this statement came up in conversation. It’s a sentiment I’ve heard before, and while it’s often said out of confusion, hurt, or anger, it reflects a broader misunderstanding about mental health and suicide. Here’s the truth: Suicide is neither selfish nor cowardly. It’s the result of someone feeling utterly overwhelmed, trapped, and hopeless—often believing their existence is a burden on others. In these moments, their mental pain becomes so consuming that they can no longer see a way out. Suicide isn’t about a lack of love for others; it’s about a profound and unbearable struggle with oneself. When we label suicide as “selfish,” we unintentionally perpetuate stigma, making it even harder for those struggling to reach out for help. Instead, we need to shift the conversation: • From blame to understanding: Recognise that suicidal thoughts stem from deep mental health challenges, not character flaws. • From judgment to compassion: Create safe spaces for people to share their pain without fear of being shamed. • From silence to action: Advocate for better access to mental health support and educate ourselves on how to be there for others. If you’ve ever thought, “Why didn’t they just talk to someone?” remember that stigma often makes people feel they can’t. Alongside this, recent research shows many who die by suicide had actually reached out for professional health within a year of their death. To anyone struggling: You are not alone. There are people who care deeply and want to support you. There are some incredible individuals and organisations across social media too - Steve Phillip of The Jordan Legacy, Chris Sibley of The OLLIE Foundation, Ripple Suicide Prevention Charity and many more. Reaching out to local support groups or online forums can be incredibly beneficial when you're navigating challenging situations. Whether you're dealing with caregiving responsibilities, health issues, or any other personal struggles, these communities offer a space where you can connect with people who truly understand what you're going through. By sharing your experiences, you not only find emotional support but also practical advice from those who have been in your shoes. Local support groups provide a sense of community and face-to-face interaction that can be very comforting. These groups often meet regularly and offer a structured environment where you can talk openly about your experiences and feelings. It's a great way to build a network of friends who can offer empathy and guidance. Plus, these groups can often provide resources and information about local services that might be helpful. Online forums offer the convenience of connecting with others from the comfort of your own home. These platforms are available 24/7, which is perfect for those late-night worries or when you just need to vent. The anonymity of online forums can also make it easier to share openly without fear of judgment. You'll find a diverse range of perspectives and solutions that can inspire you to try new approaches to your situation. Engaging in these online communities can be a lifeline, offering support and solidarity whenever you need it. Many of us will take time off over Christmas but it can be difficult to switch off, especially with hybrid working and when technology has made it so easy for everyone to stay connected. LawCare - the mental health charity for the legal sector has compiled a list of useful tips to help you take time away from work over the festive season. These include: 🔷 Leaving your work phone and laptop in a drawer at home, so the temptation isn’t there. 🔷 Disable email notifications so you don’t pick up your phone every few minutes, and don’t carry your work phone around with you. 🔷 Set boundaries by establishing limits. Whether it’s about gifts, gatherings, or the length of family visits, let friends and family know your limits. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ePQ5BQKu #ChristmasTips #MentalHealth #wellbeing

As we come to the end of National Carer's Week, we'd like to remind all of the carers in our community of some important things. Please take a moment to check in with yourself and make sure that you are travelling okay. Do you need to chat to someone? Do you need to take some time out? Do you need to do things for yourself for a while? These are all things to ask yourself to ensure you look after yourself. Just remember, it's okay to admit that you aren't travelling okay. So, if you need help - ask your support networks or seek help from a health professional. You are important, too.

CHECK IN ON OUR KAUMATUA As we embrace the festive season, let’s take a moment to check in on our kaumatua. Their well-being is vital to our collective health and happiness. Here are some simple yet meaningful ways to reach out: A Friendly Call or Video Chat: A quick chat can brighten their day and let them know they’re not alone. Drop Off a Care Package: Consider delivering some essentials or a homemade treat to show your aroha. Share a Meal: If possible, invite them for a meal or prepare something they love and drop it off. Offer Your Help: Whether it’s running errands or helping with household chores, your support can make a big difference. Plan a Visit: If safe, a visit can provide companionship and remind them they are valued members of our community. Let’s come together as a marae and ensure our kaumatua feel loved and supported. #HealthThroughTheMarae #CheckOnOurElders #CommunityCare https://lnkd.in/e6QvMxR7

Having difficulties bringing up some troublesome issues with your aging parents? You are not alone. Many people feel uncomfortable speaking about issues like personal finances, types of health care treatments, whether to remain at home or consider out of home placement, what end of life wishes might be. With Thanksgiving just a couple of weeks away, this might be a good time to start the conversation while families are together under more conducive circumstances. Avoiding these topics now might force you to make decisions under duress and have poor outcomes. Start the conversation now. Contact a life care manager who knows what questions you should be asking and assist you with getting a solid plan in place. Call me directly 619.988.7483 MaryAnn Lentini, Life Care Manager

Homeless men are less likely to seek help for health issues, often leaving conditions untreated. With 70% of homeless single adults being men, GuysGiving at The Bra Recyclers this Men's Health Awareness Month goes beyond just underwear. 🩲 Essential items like underwear do more than prevent infections—they restore dignity, confidence, and hope. These basics can be the first step for men in shelters, breaking down barriers as they seek work opportunities and a fresh start. This holiday season, consider buying an extra pack of undies to help us support these men in need. Whether shopping for your spouse or you have new, unwanted undies, send them our way! 👉 Learn how to get involved with GuysGiving through the link below! bit.ly/guys-giving
