For the executives I coach and coaches I supervise, the key insight into feeling overwhelmed is our inner world shapes our outer world. Even though we are powerless over global events and often limited in our influence over our life situations, we have the innate ability to exert a measure of control over our minds. We can manage our thinking patterns if we are mindful enough of what’s in here, which are our beliefs, perceptions, and reactions to all that is happening out there. Such was the case with the executive who would consistently tell others how much work he was always “digging out from under” and how his days were “nonstop, 24/7, with no time to breathe.” Read my latest blog post about how mindfulness and other mindful practices can help when you are feeling overwhelmed: https://lnkd.in/euMjJK_X

Day 233 of 366 Days to Build Confidence Practicing these three mindfulness skills will build your confidence. 💫 Defusion 💫 Noticing thoughts Stepping back from a thought, image or memory and not attaching to it. By detaching ourselves from our thoughts, we can let them move on. We don’t have to let thoughts control our lives. 💫 Expansion 💫 Opening up. Letting difficult emotions and feelings come, acknowledging they are there and letting them move through us. This allows fear, anxiety and anger the space to alert us there is a problem, but we do not have to get held back by them. 💫 Engagement 💫 Being present Getting actively involved in what is going on around you. Being aware and being curious. Asking, ‘What does this mean?’ Notice your thoughts Notice your emotions Acknowledge and allow Be curious about what they mean Take the message and let them move on. The images you saw at Buangkok MRT station are part of a public awareness campaign. It is a reminder to pause, reflect on our emotions, and act in a way that supports rather than harms others. Reflecting on this image reminds me how stress can sometimes push us to the edge, making us act in ways we normally wouldn’t. In these moments of frustration or illness, our reactions can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing: we always have a choice in how we respond. This is where mindfulness plays a crucial role. Practicing mindfulness gives us the space to pause and notice our emotions without letting them control us. It’s not about suppressing how we feel, but rather about becoming aware of our inner state so that we can choose a more measured response — one rooted in awareness and compassion. When we let stress, frustration, or physical discomfort take over, the people around us, including those trying to help, may bear the brunt of our reactions. But through mindfulness, we can maintain clarity and kindness even in challenging situations, which ultimately supports our well-being and those around us. Take a deep breath today. Pause. Notice what’s happening within you before reacting to what’s happening around you. Let's make mindfulness a daily practice—not just for ourselves, but for the betterment of the world around us. #knowthyself
