Open Innovation (OI) has evolved from a niche concept to a widely adopted practice over the past 20 years, shifting innovation from large organizations to a more distributed system that draws on external knowledge from universities, research institutes, and individuals. Find out how Open Innovation can enhance product sales, improve financial performance, and optimize complex ecosystems by leveraging external collaboration, while balancing potential risks like unwanted expropriation: https://lnkd.in/g88t4-8H Sage California Management Review #openinnovation University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business

I am delighted to share Chapter 4 of The Oxford Handbook of Open Innovation (https://lnkd.in/eRHs7n9j ), which I co-authored with Victor Gilsing. In this chapter, we present a fresh perspective on the concept of Open Innovation (OI), challenging conventional notions and offering new insights. Specifically, we demonstrate the potential for OI to significantly impact strategic objectives when applied indirectly. Furthermore, we question the historical dichotomy between inside-out and outside-in OI approaches. Traditionally, inside-out innovation has been associated with financial gains, while outside-in innovation is viewed as strategically significant. However, we argue that both modes of OI can be organized to yield both financial and strategic advantages.

Thank you for sharing this chapter in The Oxford Handbook on Open Innovation. At first pass, my approach to OI is slightly more practical. I focus on where in the company’s innovation cycle to best leverage OI. Then I consider the company’s capabilities versus its OI needs. To me, it is more useful for decision making across an organization. I demonstrate my approach in a 2x2 positioning map in my book, Disruptive Innovation and Digital Transformation. I will reread your chapter with more time. Thanks ☺️ #openinnovation #oxford #innovation #framework

The first-ever Handbook of #Open #Innovation is out! I had previously read the preprint version of the chapter on #RandD #Alliances and Open Innovation by my friend Hans Frankort. Now I started reading the chapter that Wim Vanhaverbeke has co-authored with Victor Gilsing (please find it below). I am intrigued by their detailed elaboration on "outside-out" Open Innovation (if you thought outside-in and inside-out are the only modes in which organization do OI, it's time to rethink!). Editors of this #Oxford #Handbook of #Open #Innovation are: Henry Chesbrough, Agnieszka Radziwon, Wim Vanhaverbeke, and Joel West

Last year I had the privilege of attending an intensive course on open Innovation at Harvard, that has significantly influenced my perspective on innovation within our industry. This course delved into how companies or governments can overcome challenges and revamp their processes by embracing external sources of ideas like Lean Solutions Group. It’s fascinating to learn that often, the freshest and most impactful ideas come from outside the traditional confines of an industry or organization, challenging the biases that come with years of insider experience. Today, I want to share a compelling graphic by Rachel D'Erminio, illustrating the generation vs. selection of ideas across different methods of innovation. This visual not only highlights the diverse sources from which innovative ideas can spring but also emphasizes the importance of having a balanced approach to generating and selecting these ideas to drive meaningful change. In our journey towards innovation, it's crucial to remember that groundbreaking ideas can come from anywhere and anyone. Embracing this open-minded approach can lead to truly transformative solutions and advancements. #Innovation #OpenInnovation #Harvard #Ideation #ProcessImprovement #BusinessStrategy #RachelDErminio #LSG

In the ever-evolving realm of innovation, a troubling trend is emerging—the rise of self-proclaimed experts with credentials as insubstantial as the pages of the very innovation books they often quote. This prompts us to question whether an individual can genuinely be considered an expert in a multifaceted field based solely on theoretical knowledge or if […]

How to measure the success of radical innovation projects? Definitely not similarly as for incremental innovation, especially in the very early stages! You should maximize learning and experimentation, rather than many "hard" outcome-based factors. This was the core insight of our paper in 2018 with Jimmi Normann Kristiansen, published in Journal of Business Strategy with the title: "Measuring radical innovation project success: typical metrics don’t work" (for an OA link to the paper, please go to the end of this post) At the beginning of our study, we cited innovation professor Gina O'Connor in relation to her pioneering research on radical and breakthrough innovation. According to her, KPIs for radical innovation can resemble incremental innovation KPIs in the acceleration phase, but in earlier phases, we need different types of metrics. As Gina's work was a big inspiration for us for the 2018 paper, it was my honor and pleasure to recently interview her for a story published in R&D Today website. Check out this short video takeaway from our longer interview and more insights about measuring innovation project success here: https://lnkd.in/dW-kRSGJ For further insights from Gina & Dr Peter Robbins related to innovation management profession, check out the story from below link. NOTE - it includes also an invite to a free webinar on the same topic! https://lnkd.in/dWsSSgQ9 Finally, here is the OA link to our 2018 paper if you are interested: https://lnkd.in/dMtVTie5 #LUTbiz #KPIs #RadicalInnovation #IncrementalInnovation #metrics #InnovationManagement
