The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is calling on African governments to leverage the growing aviation sector for broader economic and social development. Africa’s airlines are expected to earn a net profit of US$100 million in 2024, a positive sign despite challenges such as high costs, infrastructure gaps, and taxation. IATA’s Focus Africa initiative targets key areas like safety, infrastructure, and sustainability to unlock aviation’s potential. Africa’s aviation industry holds immense promise. With a population exceeding 1.4 billion and a growing middle class, the demand for air travel across the continent is surging. Yet, the sector still faces hurdles such as infrastructure gaps, regulatory challenges, and limited connectivity between African nations. Currently, Africa accounts for only a small fraction of global air traffic, but the potential for growth is undeniable. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat and initiatives like the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) are paving the way for greater regional integration, which will boost trade, tourism, and investment opportunities. Investing in modern airports, fostering strong airline partnerships, and encouraging supportive policies could unlock a golden age for African aviation. With the right focus, the industry can become a powerful driver of economic growth, connecting communities and enabling the continent to take its rightful place in global aviation. IATA urges South Africa's new government to prioritize aviation development as a key driver of economic growth and job creation. The aviation industry is expected to add 345 million additional passenger journeys by 2043, injecting billions into GDP and creating thousands of jobs. International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommends focusing on infrastructure costs, safety leadership, skills development, and sustainability. Continuous consultation between aviation authorities and airlines, maintaining safety standards, developing world-class skills, and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 are crucial steps. By addressing these areas, South Africa can strengthen its aviation sector, facilitate trade, encourage investment, and reduce unemployment. Recently, we took part in the 6th East African Community (EAC) Aviation Symposium, organised by the EAC CASSOA Secretariat and the TANZANIA CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY(TCAA). Held in Zanzibar, #Tanzania a few weeks ago, this year’s theme was "The Future of Aviation – Maintaining Resilient, Sustainable, Innovative, Safe, and Secure Aviation Systems." The event brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss the future of aviation in the region. Our country leads for Uganda and Tanzania- Kenneth Muhangi and Shehzada Walli participated, mingled with peers, shared valuable insights, and explored innovative solutions that support our mission to boost aviation resilience and sustainability. At GSD, one of our primary objectives is to bring transformative aviation technologies to Africa. We work closely with CAAs across the continent to ensure that businesses can effectively navigate the regulatory landscape and achieve success in African markets. Africa's aviation industry is experiencing strong growth, driven by expanding routes, better connectivity, and increasing travel demand. Notably, seat availability rose 7% from July 2023 to July 2024, with intra-Africa routes up 3%. Passenger traffic is expected to grow by 15% in 2024, according to AFRAA. African airlines are seeing improved revenue, with major hubs like Addis Ababa and Johannesburg boosting connectivity. The GACA - General Authority of Civil Aviation - Saudi Arabia has authorised China Southern Airlines to commence passenger and cargo services, between Saudi Arabia and China. Starting April 16, 2024, flights will operate from Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen to Riyadh. The summer 2024 schedule will see four passenger/commercial flights and three air cargo flights weekly. The introduction of these new routes will strengthen the Kingdom’s global connectivity and encourage greater competition in the Saudi aviation sector, in line with the Kingdom’s Saudi Aviation Strategy. The strategy will more than double Saudi Arabia’s connectivity by 2030, including through a dedicated Saudi Air Connectivity Program to support the Kingdom’s aviation and tourism sectors. Commenting on the decision, Ali Rajab, Executive Vice President for Air Transport and International Cooperation, said: “At GACA, we welcome this latest announcement of new routes to Saudi Arabia, which provides a welcome boost to Saudi Arabia’s global connectivity, demonstrates the progress that is being made in delivering on the objectives of the Saudi Aviation Strategy and will create more competitive and empowered aviation and tourism sectors. In 2024, ten African countries lead in the number of #airlines, reflecting the region's increasing reliance on air transport due to vast geographical spreads, underdeveloped road and rail infrastructures, and challenging terrains. According to data from Planespotters, these countries have expanded their fleets and networks to meet the growing demand for air travel. Nigeria tops the list with 87 airlines, followed by South Africa with 70, and Kenya with 64. Other countries on the list include Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Angola, Tanzania, Sudan, and Gabon. Africa's Aviation Market is Taking Off! Commercial airline operations in Africa are entering a rapid growth phase. With air traffic expected to grow by 7.4% annually—outpacing the global average—this is a huge opportunity for airlines to expand their reach. But how do they do it? AirExplore, Slovakia’s premier airline, has just announced an exciting partnership with a Nigerian airline! Starting this November, AirExplore will send four 737-800s to Nigeria, providing 730 seats during the winter months. Not only does this move sustain revenue during a slow period in Europe, but it also helps AirExplore expand into the booming African aviation market. Flying in #Africa is a whole different experience, according to Martin Štulajter, AirExplore's CEO. “We have signed a contract with a Nigerian airline to provide them with four of our 737-800 aircraft from November 2024 through March 2025. This collaboration will not only benefit the client’s customers but also strengthen our presence in the African market while sustaining revenue during the challenging winter period.” Despite concerns about infrastructure, AirExplore is prepared. With in-house maintenance bases and years of experience operating across the continent, they’ve made Africa “business as usual.” As the aviation industry continues to grow in Africa, the ACMI model will play a key role in helping airlines scale and increase profitability.
