They are typically composed of fine particles of sand, clay, and water. This can harm aquatic life and make the water unsafe for drinking and irrigation. Sedimentation: Tailings can settle at the bottom of water bodies, blocking sunlight and suffocating aquatic life Landslides: Tailings dams can collapse, releasing tailings into the surrounding area. This can cause flooding, damage to property, and environmental contamination. One of the most common questions we get when discussing horizontal remediation wells for a specific project or during a brown bag is; “What does the IDW look like and how is it handled”. Most of the time we are drilling with a biodegradable (clay-free) polymer and the waste stream can be a slurry of up to 50% suspended solids. One way Ellingson-DTD manages the slurry is to place the material into a lined water-tight roll off container. At the end of the project, absorbent material can be added to solidify the waste for transport and disposal. #horizontalenvironmental #groundwater #contamination
