I gave a webinar the other day and asked the audience "how many people are you nurturing to replace you?" Some folks replied (via chat) 1 or 2, others said "all of them!" and one person wrote 1,400. I LOVE those organizations that are preparing everyone because a) you can't control someone else's decisions or preferences, so even if they are the best candidate, they may not want to be a leader b) you can't put all your eggs in one basket; what if that person gets an amazing job offer or their spouse does? or something causes them to reassess their priorities (like a pandemic?) c) you can't go wrong preparing EVERYONE to be a future leader! Worst case scenario everyone is a better communicator, problem solver, decision maker, collaborator... and one or two are "leaders."
