The biggest mistake you can make as an innovator is to build a solution looking for a problem. RnD often skews too far towards research, and isn’t a product or project development lab. By watching the weather we focus on one of the most overlooked questions in strategy - ‘how did we get here?’ Gap analysis (present state - ideal future) works well in complicated environments but not in complex ones. Recognize the path dependencies and the major recent events and ‘slow’ trends. Look at demographics 10s of years, geo/politics 4 years, as much as you look at quarterly reports and the ‘closest alligator to the boat’. - but remember we don’t get where we want to go by just fixing deficits, we have to find meaning and have a coherent framework to create value with what IS NOW. In order to find the space to do the next right thing, we need to understand if we are contributing to wider trends or subjected to them. There is a certain amount of ego that is required (and/or imposter syndrome) to be an innovator. I dont believe in the ‘great man’ theory of history, nor in a great man theory of innovation. I recently had the honor of delivering a keynote speech on innovating for tomorrow's warfighters and shifting the culture within our future leaders at the Future Military Space Technology Conference in Los Angeles, put on by SAE Media Group . I got the great pleasure of being amongst some impressive attendees and presenters while I highlighted the critical need to integrate practical, hands-on experience in innovation from day one. I emphasized that innovation is more than just high-tech solutions and tangible products and items—it's also about transforming processes and thinking differently to achieve positive outcomes. Those small wins and projects can create ripple effects to larger, monumental solutions and fixes. Changing the dynamic culture to prepare future leaders to take on the challenges of a rapidly evolving landscape seems daunting, but it is extremely necessary and beneficial to deter our foreign adversaries through innovation. Today our first Project Mercury Innovators Forum @ NATO cohort got a real taste of the star power behind transformative innovation. Air Marshall Johnny Stringer, Deputy Commander of Allied Air Command held a rallying call to action to the cohort, empowering our teams and sharing his own energy and drive to bring innovation forward. The Air Marshal highlighted the importance of communication and outreach, and building coalitions to join the fight for innovation. He acknowledged that achieving transformative change is far from easy, however it is something we must do. We must collect energetic people in focused teams to understand the problems of our organizations. Looking from ‘across the street’ is essential to gain a different perspective and to unlock the freedom to truly understand problems that exist inside the organization. We need new thinking and practice with innovating in community and it is essential to not get ‘lost in the process’ - but to always return to what results we are trying to create. We also need to allow our innovators the freedom to explore the problem space and experiment, to which the Air Marshal offered his personal support. Innovation is not just creative thinking, it’s creative doing. We’re proud and honored by the Air Marshal’s visit, and believe it shows true innovation is supported by the highest of levels, empowering us to grow the innovation community and in turn empower our teams to pick up the challenge! #WeAreNATO #WeAreInnovators

I just came across Naval Ravikant's video: "Human creativity is non-linear." He shares a compelling idea: A small group of innovators can drive massive change. Naval points out that throughout history, revolutions—whether scientific, political, or technological—have been driven by just a handful of visionaries. He gives examples like: - The scientific revolution in the 1800s. - Thomas Edison and his contemporaries. - The pioneers of Silicon Valley. As Naval mentions, quoting one of his favorite philosophers, Arthur Schopenhauer: "To be alone is the fate of all great souls." Yet, even the greatest minds crave the company of other intelligent people. Naval suggests that by creating institutions and communities where smart people can gather, we can spark the next wave of progress.
