Since 2021 Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscapes #FiPL in Cranborne Chase National Landscape has funded over 147 projects benefiting climate, nature, people and place. 🚜🌳 One of these many projects has been the successful installation of kissing gates on a Burcombe farm, with land protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), improving public access. The aim of the project was to keep motorcycles off the protected land, while also ensuring livestock were kept safely enclosed. The outcome includes a more accessible area for all, without the need to move heavy gates. Walkers have responded positively about their ease of operation and how much easier it is to stay on track when enjoying the National Landscape. Find out more about FiPL in Cranborne Chase, and the many other success stories on the National Landscape here https://buff.ly/3Da9yos

When natural disasters strike, the effects on farming communities can be devastating 🌪️⛈️ Discover the resilience and innovation within the agriculture sector as they adapt to the changing landscape. The Texas Freeze-Thaw: A Texas dairy farm faced a crippling winter storm that disrupted power and froze water supplies. Working with a resiliency consultancy company similar to ReadyGlobal's cold-weather contingency planning helped them implement generator backups and alternative water sources for their cows. This proactive approach minimized animal loss and ensured continued milk production. #FarmingChallenges #ResilientFarming #InnovationInAgri #naturaldisasters #farmingcommunity #agriculture #resilienceinfarming #innovationinagriculture #climatechangeadaptation Image by meguminachev from Unsplash

On this #WorldOctopusDay - you can help stop this! If you live in the U.S., please contact your senators and ask them to support S. 4810, the OCTOPUS Act, which will prevent the cruel practice of octopus farming from expanding to the United States. 📣 🐙 You can find your state’s two senators here: https://buff.ly/3q6rF2s And you can learn more about this issue by visiting our new page, “The Ethical and Environmental Impacts of Octopus Farming,” here: https://buff.ly/3ZQMrIR 🌱

🌪️⛈️ When natural disasters strike, farming communities bear the brunt of their impact. But amidst adversity, the agriculture sector demonstrates remarkable resilience and innovation. Let’s delve into a real-life example: 🔥 The Texas Freeze-Thaw: A Texas dairy farm faced a crippling winter storm that disrupted power and froze water supplies. However, their proactive approach, guided by a resiliency consultancy similar to ReadyGlobal’s cold-weather contingency planning, made all the difference. They swiftly implemented generator backups and alternative water sources for their cows. The result? Minimized animal loss and uninterrupted milk production. 🐄🥛 🌱 Let’s celebrate the spirit of #ResilientFarming and #InnovationInAgri. These stories remind us that even in the face of adversity, farmers adapt, innovate, and ensure food security. 🌾🌎 #FarmingChallenges #NaturalDisasters #FarmingCommunity #Agriculture #ClimateChangeAdaptation #ResilienceInFarming ReadyGlobal #InnovationInAgriculture

Great analysis here from Barnaby Coupe of The Wildlife Trusts on the implications of the Budget for nature-friendly farming. Not as bad as I had feared. But we all know that a flatlined budget = a real terms cut. Nothing influences nature’s fortunes in the UK more than farming. If government and we as a society are serious about nature restoration, climate change and hitting legally-binding targets, we need to go much, much further in supporting nature-friendly farming.
With the long-awaited budget from UK Government now public, Barnaby Coupe, senior land use policy manager for The Wildlife Trusts, looks at the implications the announcement has on Defra's flagship environment schemes and support for nature-friendly farming in our latest blog. He summarises, that whilst the annual budget for nature-friendly farming has been maintained at £2.4 million, the picture is far from rosy, with independent analysis earlier this year estimating £3.1 billion was required to meet the UK Government's own legally binding targets. We asked you what you think the most critical factor is to enhance bioconversion rates in insect farming. You mostly answered ‘Feedstock Quality’. The answer is actually ‘Environmental Control.’ That’s why we’ve spent the last 3 years developing our proprietary climate control and airflow algorithm that ensures you stay cost effective and consistent. We’ve laid out down why environmental control is the most critical factor for enhancing bioconversion rates and what you need to watch out for. Important to highlight the need to create mosaic of habitats and not remove Bracken entirely. Good grazing management with the right livestock could be the most cost effective and least intrusive way to do this on steep, hard to access land. Although too much Bracken suppresses other plant growth and reduces potential productivity on grazing land, as described, Bracken is needed for particular habitat creation too. And as I have found in my field work, soil under carbon has an elevated concentration of carbon compared with grassland. And though research is limited, could Bracken be underestimated when accounting for carbon sequestration?
