📖 Case Study: Shostka research: nature & climate  -- Just a week ago, the town of Shostka in northern Ukraine was subjected to another brutal Russian attack. Thirteen missiles were fired at the city, damaging its infrastructure. There are many cities like this in Ukraine. Nevertheless, even now, during the ongoing hostilities, teams of urbanists, sociologists, and architects are working on visions for the future development of Ukrainian regions. In cooperation with Urban Reforms, Deep Eco experts are also involved in this work. In 2024, the Deep Eco team contributed to the strategic vision for the development of Shostka City. Our mission was to assess and unlock the potential of the community's natural capital, from forests to agroecosystems. This project redefined how the region views nature — not just as isolated wilderness but as a vital contributor to local prosperity. For example, Shostka's forests alone provide ecosystem services worth 150 million UAH annually (1 ha), from clean air to climate regulation! Using GIS analysis and stakeholder-focused research, we identified key opportunities for sustainable development and climate adaptation, including addressing urban heat islands and preserving green infrastructure. The result is a comprehensive report that serves as a roadmap for informed decision-making, biodiversity conservation, and ecological education — all aligned with European standards. The countdown is on! In 12 days, I will embark on the first of 3 trips to Quezon City, to explore the way the city, and the Philippines more broadly, is harnessing the multifunctionality of urban agriculture to improve their resilience to the multi-faceted impacts of climate change. As the world approaches 2° of global warming, cities face an increasing number of entangled crises which are both compounding, and cascading, resulting in novel and unforeseen disruptions – also coined ‘polycrisis’. Accordingly, my PhD research delves into the ability of different types of urban agriculture, that is, outdoor community gardens, building-integrated greenhouses, and technology driven vertical farms, to strengthen both the specific and general resilience capacities of cities. As these urban agriculture practices differ in the way they impact cities, I seek to better understand how they can be integrated into cities in a complimentary manner, which utilizes the specific social and geographical context to maximize resilience benefits and contribute to Sustainable Development Goals which extend beyond SDG 2 'No Hunger' and 11 'Sustainable Cities & Communities'. The Philippines, and specifically, Quezon City is an exciting and intriguing case study, due to the range of urban agriculture policies and support mechanisms being implemented, including education and training, the provision of supplies, and various funding schemes, all of which have contributed to the creation of over 1046 urban farms in Quezon City in recent years. I'm excited to share that leads involved in the Land Restoration Challenge of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI) recently gathered to highlight our progress in communicating land restoration efforts at UN Campus in Bonn. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This gathering brought together 26 experts and stakeholders from 19 countries, representing every region of the world.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥? ⁣⁣ To foster collaboration and innovation to advance land restoration, biodiversity conservation, and address climate change impacts.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧?⁣⁣ Restore 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 hectares of degraded land by 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎 and reduce degraded land by 𝟓𝟎% 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟎 and I'm thrilled to be at forefront and contribute my efforts to achieve this. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In Africa, Kenya to be precise, the Center for Ecosystem Restoration has adopted four strategic pillars to drive this mission forward:⁣⁣ 1. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡: Strengthening ecosystem restoration knowledge.⁣⁣ 2. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭: Empowering ecosystem restoration champions.⁣⁣ 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞: Enhancing the availability of ecosystem restoration resources.⁣⁣ 4. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞: Implementing and promoting best practices in ecosystem restoration.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Some ongoing projects under the above strategic pillars include:⁣⁣ 1. Implementing TGBS methodology on sites and assessing the impacts of afforestation, reforestation, and restoration on native biodiversity. We're also training assessors and building capacity in partnership with The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS).⁣⁣ ⁣ 2. Conserving Kenya’s Central Highlands' threatened tree species through community participation and integration into planting programs, in partnership with Fondation Franklinia.⁣⁣ ⁣ 3. Applying restoration techniques for degraded savanna grasslands in Maasai Mara, using scientific research and traditional ecological knowledge, in collaboration with @BaseCamp Foundation.⁣⁣ ⁣ 4. 🌍🌿 ACECoR Celebrates World GIS Day 🌿🌍 Today, on #GISDay, we at the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) join the global community in recognizing the transformative power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in enhancing coastal resilience and sustainable development. As part of our commitment to building future leaders in geospatial sciences, we were excited to host students from Breman Asikuma Senior High at the Geospatial Information Unit at ACECoR, University of Cape Coast. The students had the opportunity to explore firsthand how GIS is used in our research and conservation efforts, learning about its applications in coastal resilience and environmental protection. At ACECoR, we continue to empower decision-makers, researchers, and communities to adapt to climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure the sustainability of Africa’s coastlines. Some examples: -Politechnika Koszalińska, in collaboration with the Science for the Environment Foundation, developed a revitalisation programme for municipalities in the Special Exclusion Zone of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship by identifying degraded areas through an assessment of social, economic, technical, environmental and spatial factors. -The James Hutton Institute carried out the National Islands Plan Survey (2020) results explorer. The survey used a customised sub-regional geography to capture diverse lived experiences and became an official geography for Scotland. 🚀 Big news for Senegal! The country has successfully launched its first nano-satellite, #GAINDESAT-1A, 100% designed and built by a team of Senegalese engineers and technicians, via SpaceX from California! This incredible achievement addresses a critical need for spatial data in Senegal. Over the next five years, GAINDESAT-1A will gather vital environmental information across the nation through data stations, providing real-time imagery on key issues such as: - Water quality - Coastal erosion and marine winds (critical, due to the country's 500 Km of coastline) - Agricultural zone developments - Identification of high-risk environmental areas This project will be a key enabler for the government, policymakers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding resource management, climate adaptation, and natural disaster response. It also reinforces Senegal’s commitment to #data #sovereignty, ensuring the country can control and utilize its own environmental data for national development. In parallel with this significant development, I am excited to share that I have completed my certification in Integrated Spatial Planning. This course has deepened my understanding of the crucial role spatial data plays in addressing environmental and developmental challenges. Through this course, I was able to: - Understand the importance of spatial data and its parameters, such as accuracy, completeness, currentness, resolution, and consistency. - Learn about the Systematic Conservation Planning Process and the relevance of nature-based solutions. - Explore Priority Policy Targets to address the interconnected impacts of climate change, nature, the economy, and human well-being. A highlight of the program was the use of Integrated Spatial Planning methodology to support countries in creating their own national Essential Life Support Areas ( ELSA) maps. #ElSA #maps, show areas that should be prioritized to most efficiently deliver across countries’ top #policy #targets on #biodiversity, #climate change adaptation, and human well-being. I am particularly excited to see how #GAINDESAT-1A and the #SENSAT project can be utilized by the Senegalese government and relevant stakeholders—such as Indigenous People and Local Communities (#IPLCs), NGOs, academia, and the Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition—to create Senegal’s ELSA maps. These tools will be instrumental in minimizing biodiversity loss and improving climate resilience by enabling a proactive, data-driven approach to environmental challenges.
