The 'Transforming Evidence Network' TEN conference hosted an "Immersion" session for improving #government using #evidence with research and action. It was one of few platforms dedicated to a focus on government. The Pew Charitable Trusts Pan-African Collective for Evidence NPC and ACED convened committed actors representing #researchers #evaluators #policymakers #funders #NGOs #CSOs and #educators to build long term relationships for sustainable action. Our session focused on the #experience of government in using #data and evidence for change through #dialogue and #debate. It was daunting at first to mix those who work with governments across the #north and #south contextual divides, but we found synergy and common challenges. Sabrina W. gave us a reality check on the alarmimg statistics on #gbvf in #SA and concrete recommendations for Government T. Arthur Chibwana from IDinsight helped us navigate different entry points to reach policy makers using data Wiseman Magasela, DPhil reflected on our assumptions during past and current efforts in institutionalizing Evidence Lawrence Friedl from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration demonstrated the value of earth science data for applied use in #public and #private agencies My co-moderator Jenni Owen from North Carolina Office of Strategic Partnerships #USA What an awesome mix of views, experiences and professional perspectives. We crossed lanes and built relations to identify barriers when chasing performance targets and our separate mandates. Female partner takeover in honor of IWD!  🎯 Hear from our amazing Managing Partner, Merav Rotem Naaman: This Friday marks International Women's Day globally. Normally, I'd be highlighting the strides we've made in women's rights and the very long road still ahead of us. Not this year. Israel faces unprecedented challenges. The events of October 7th have cast a long shadow, particularly for the women still held captive, their suffering compounded by a deafening silence from many global women's organizations. This silence feels like a betrayal at a time when their voices are needed the most. It's incomprehensible that in today's world, any justification exists for the rape and torture of women, men, and children, much less from groups dedicated to protecting women's rights. At the same time, I am compelled to recognize the resilience of Israeli women. Since October 7th, 2023, they've demonstrated extraordinary courage and leadership, not just on the front lines but also within our communities, rallying to support civilians and those in need during these turbulent times. Their actions have dispelled any remaining doubts about their capabilities, proving they are formidable in every aspect of life. It's crucial to remember: women bear the heaviest burdens at times of war. Women in Israel and women in Gaza are shouldering this weight right now. However, my hope is that women will also lead the way in ending this cycle of violence. History shows us that women have played significant roles in concluding conflicts and promoting peace, from the Four Mothers in Israel to Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan in Northern Ireland. I hold onto the hope that women will again be instrumental in finding a way to bring back the captives and end the war. Today, I choose to honor the incredible spirit of women. Looking back on 2023 fills us with joy and gratitude. We achieved so much in our mission to empower African girls and women in tech. Here's a glimpse of what we accomplished: • We empowered 28,563 girls and women through our programs and events, giving them the skills they need to succeed. • 5,000,000+ Impressions and reach on social media, spreading our message far and wide. This was a 40% increase from the previous year, showing our impact is growing stronger. • Our community hit 42,243 members across 44 countries, creating a network of support and collaboration. • We established 39 local chapters in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, bringing our mission to communities everywhere and much more! 👏👏👏 We didn't do this alone, our amazing partners, donors, sponsors, allies, and most importantly our, Queens, play a huge role in our accomplishments 😊😊👏👏👏 These numbers aren't just statistics or random figures, they represent real lives changed for the better. Lives of young girls and women all over Africa. But that's not all. In 2023, we committed to empowering 100,000 African girls and women with digital skills by 2030, and we're well on our way to achieving that goal. Kicking off 2024, we did so with even more determination knowing that there are more women and young girls out there who need the support, resources, and opportunities we provide. With your support, we're ready to make an even bigger impact, promote inclusion, and a difference for women and young girls in tech all over Africa. The profession of data science is set to flourish with these current stars & future leaders!

I was honoured to be invited to speak today as part of the Vilnius Conference: Futurescape, organised by Investors' Forum, alongside leaders in business, politics and innovation. Topics ranged from the impact of AI on the economy, to defense and security, to ageing and healthcare. I was pleased to be able to share some reflections on the impact of an ageing population, as well as several other factors, on the provision of equitable and accessible eye care – a topic close to my heart. This continues to be a significant focus for us at Roche, alongside our partners at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), in support of the United Nations General Assembly’s ‘vision for everyone’ 2030 resolution (https://lnkd.in/ej_Fbewh). As a community, how can we meet the UN target of providing eye care services for the 1.1 billion people living with preventable sight loss by 2030? I believe there are four key areas we need to focus on: 1. Improving data quality and collection, both via trials but also eHealth solutions 2. Intervening as early as possible with better detection of, and earlier treatment for, retinal diseases 3. Investing in innovation to help us develop more effective, longer-lasting and cost-effective treatment options that ultimately improve sight and reduce the economic impact on society 4. Increasing access to care and addressing sociodemographic, gender and income barriers Thank you to the organisers of Vilnius for bringing us together to discuss this important topic.
