Diehl Defence, a world-leading supplier of air-launched guided missile systems, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), manufacturer and aircraft authority of the FA-50 series and KF-21 combat aircraft, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of intensifying their integration and marketing efforts, addressing IRIS-T potential on FA-50 and KF-21 aircraft. The purpose of the agreement is the joint goal to integrate the IRIS-T missile into FA-50/T-50 and KF-21 Block II aircraft. This confirms the intention of both companies to investigate the potential for cooperation, as previously announced in an earlier agreement, signed during ADEX 2021. Diehl Defence and KAI have worked together for a number of years by now, combining Diehl Defence’s experience and capabilities in the field of development, production and integration of missile systems with KAI’s track record with successfully launching and managing military aircraft programs. The collaboration began in 2017 with the start of the integration of IRIS-T into the KF-21 Block I fighter. How is the Inter-Government Agreement (IGA) provision in India’s Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 (DAP) influencing Indian industries? The IGA mechanism serves as an effective way to quickly introduce advanced defense products and systems, aiding in the modernization of the Indian Armed Forces. Notable examples of IGA procurements include the Rafale aircraft, S-400 Triumph missile, Apache attack helicopters, Chinook helicopters, M777 howitzers, etc. Military, technological, economic, and diplomatic advantages as well as strategic partnerships are key considerations in choosing the IGA route. Unlike standard procurement procedures under DAP, IGAs are negotiated based on mutually agreed terms between the governments of both countries, offering greater flexibility in finalizing the deals. However, one concern is the potential over-reliance on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for these defense products. Most IGAs come with an Offset clause, which may not contribute significantly to the transfer of critical technologies to Indian industries. If IGAs included provisions for Transfer of Technology (ToT) to Indian industries, it could enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and ensure long-term indigenous maintenance support and services. Ultimately, while IGAs are an effective tool for quick defense modernization, their long-term success will depend on how well India integrates these procurements into its broader strategy for self-reliance in defense technology. #MinistryofDefence #selfreliance #aatmanirbharbharat #defenceacquisitionprocedure #DAP2020 #Intergovernmentagreement #defence #indianindustries

Once heavily dependent on foreign military technology, Pakistan is now emerging as a global defence supplier, capable of competing in advanced markets. This transformation, led by organisations such as the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and Global Industrial & Defence Solutions (GIDS), underscores the country’s evolution from a regional player to a serious contender in the international arms trade. Azerbaijan’s recent induction of the JF-17C Block-III into its air force highlights the success of Pakistan’s defence exports. The JF-17C, developed jointly with China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation, represents a significant technological leap over its predecessors.
