24 May 2024 - Returning to Outward Bound Malaysia (OBM) post-pandemic was a nostalgic and exhilarating experience. Having been there before as both a participant and a chaperone, today was different—it was the closing ceremony for FGV's Management Trainee program. Nineteen eager trainees embarked on a five-day experiential learning journey, led by the exceptional trio of instructors: Shukri, Hafiz, and Alif. The trainees discovered the depths of their potential, learning far beyond what they had anticipated. They were immersed in the 'old school' way of character building—a rigorous, hands-on approach that is essential for preparing them for the corporate world and life itself. OBM instills core values necessary for success: discipline, respect, agility, a sense of urgency, and, most importantly, "common sense". The Whalers activity stood out, encapsulating all aspects of leadership and team dynamics. The real thrill came when crises emerged during the journey, testing their resolve and camaraderie. Witnessing this transformative process and partially participating reminded me of OBM's true essence. It reaffirmed my belief that OBM is the ultimate program for team and leadership development. Here, "on time" means late, and no matter the weather, life goes on. #OutwardBoundMalaysia

Yesterday marked the start of a special 3-month series with Philip Morris International as part of their Career Hub and Professional Development offering. We kicked off the session with a few key statistics, two of which highlighted below: ➡️ 44% of core skills required for the average job will change by 2027 (The World Economic Forum, 2023). ➡️ 94% of employees said they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their learning and development (LinkedIn Learning Report, 2024). We’re witnessing seismic shifts in the way we work, driven by various accelerators—pandemics, financial uncertainty, political unrest, and the rapid pace of technological advancement to name only a few. The boundaries between work and home have never been so blurred. It’s essential for organisations to prioritise the development of their people, not just for individual growth, but for the organisation’s long-term survival in the modern world. I have worked with the PMI team for many years now and they continually adapt to meet the evolving needs of their people. Thank you for organising this special series, Natalia Stapor and Libby Clifford and well done on all your hard work! It was an absolute pleasure to be back with so many of team yesterday. My role over the next few months is not to be a training provider nor an authority figure, but a human. To connect with them, work alongside them, and provide the information, methodology, support, accountability, and hopefully a bit of inspiration—so they can understand where they are, where they want to be, and how they get there when it comes to their careers. Admittedly, this photo might be "fake news" since yesterday was online —but it makes for a better post, doesn’t it? A few years ago, I took a chance and failed. I went for a role and missed out. In the aftermath, like many, I cried into my soup. But this time, I decided to pick myself up. I reflected honestly on what went wrong despite feeling ready for the challenge, and I put a strategy in place to minimize the chances of it happening again. I embraced a learning mindset. I embarked on a three-year Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship via the NHS levy, delivered through University Centre Quayside (UCQ). Why? Because I wanted to close the gap. To make it harder for any potential employer to say no to me. I needed to focus my mind as COVID turned our world upside down. But spinning plates is rarely easy. Since then, I’ve welcomed a second child, faced family losses and major health scares, all while continuing to navigate the complex world of NHS Procurement. But i did it. I’m proud to say I’ve completed my CMDA with distinction. I earned a BA(Hons) in Professional Management with a healthy 2.1, alongside a Chartered Management Institute Level 5 in Management and Leadership. I’ll be applying for my Chartered Manager status in due course knowing I am better prepared to be a leader people deserve. And finally i have a moral to a story. When faced with setbacks, it's natural to feel disheartened. However, resilience and self-reflection can transform failure into a learning opportunity. By embracing a proactive approach and seeking personal growth, we can close the gaps in our skills and experiences. Life may present challenges and complexities, but dedication and perseverance pave the way to success. Keep learning and striving, and you'll achieve your goals despite the obstacles. Go get your slice of the world. You wont be disappointed.
