The most successful startups I've been around have had REALLY STRONG product leaders (ha! I bet you thought I would say commercial leaders). The one who stands out the most for me (of course, there are others) is Ronald Hildebrandt at Virgin Pulse. In the early days, he was never afraid (he asked for it!) to get on the phone with our customers. He also stayed hyper-aware of what was happening in the market, always one step ahead of everyone else when innovating our product. I learned a lot from Ron and typically immediately start a process where market-facing folks collect and share market feedback with the product team wherever I go. Has this been your experience? You Manage The System — Not People We often overlook the problems in the system (including processes, strategy, resources, ..) and push it onto the team when we fall short. Modern product development teams place a strong emphasis on hiring the "right" people. Why? Because once you have the right team, the focus is on one variable — *System*. Quite right Brandon Barton - if instead of looking at is as a dynamic pricing opportunity, it was framed from the point of view of the customer, then applying all the levers of ‘revenue management’ it could actually be profit & customer experience enhancing simultaneously. Dynamic Pricing is such a small part of the bigger vision of the total opportunity. A comprehensive revenue management program for restaurants considers throughput, guest satisfaction, guest return rate, frequency cycles, basket & bundle optimization and will optimize display systems to influence profitable consumer behavior that also improves the customer experience. The problem with using dynamic pricing in isolation is that it’s the same lever as couponing — it can drive revenue today but in isolation it cues the customer that your value proposition is your price. That’s a commodity strategy - and it’s appropriate for brands that want to compete as commodities.
