The Madras High Court has invalidated a Government Order issued by the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes & Minorities Welfare (BCC) Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, which included transgender persons as part of the Most Backward Class community eligible for reservation benefits. The court's decision highlights concerns that the government has failed to properly implement the Supreme Court's 2014 NALSA judgment, which recognized the rights of transgender individuals and mandated affirmative action measures. #HighCourt #SupremeCourt #SupremeCourtofIndia #Transgender #Legal #Law #India

The legal recognition of the rights of single mothers as sole guardians marks significant progress towards gender equality and the empowerment of women. Ensuring access to justice is a fundamental step towards racial and gender equality, protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, supporting vulnerable communities, and safeguarding children's welfare. By focusing on victim-centered, gender-sensitive, and human rights-based policing, along with accessible legal aid services, we can dismantle systemic barriers and empower marginalized groups. Let's work together to create a criminal justice system that serves everyone fairly. #CCPCJ33

Here is a good news for Monday! The Indian government's decision to form a 6-member panel to examine the issues faced by the queer community is a significant step towards inclusivity and equality for the #LGBTQIA+ community. Here's why it is considered a positive move: 1. Addressing Discrimination: The panel will ensure that members of the LGBTQIA+ community do not face discrimination in access to goods, services, or social welfare entitlementa. 2. Preventing Violence and Harassment: It will examine measures to protect the community from any threats of violence, harassment, or coercion. 3. Health and Well-being: The committee will look into preventing involuntary medical treatments and surgeries, which can be detrimental to the physical and mental health of queer individuals. 4. Legal and Administrative Support: Following the Supreme Court's refusal to grant legal recognition to same-sex marriages, the panel will explore administrative steps to address concerns of same-sex couples. 5. Inclusive Policy Making: The committee includes secretaries from various ministries, indicating a multi-faceted approach to understanding and solving the issues faced by the queer community. I see the formation of this committee as an important step in recognising the rights of the #queer community in India. From our living spaces to workplaces, we LGBTQIA+ persons deserve a discrimination free environment assuring a safe and secure future. As an activist and a Southern Region Representative of the National Council of Trans Persons, I feel very happy and positive about the step taken by the Centre. One of 2024's happiest news is this! One more reason to celebrate #PrideMonth ofcourse.

Gender-based violence is a grave violation of human rights and a significant barrier to gender equality. Addressing GBV requires a coordinated global effort that includes legal reforms, social and cultural change, and support for survivors. By working collectively, society can create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, lives free from violence.
Every #child has a right to be protected from violence, as enshrined in the Child's Rights Act. Despite this, millions of Nigerian children are subjected to violence. According to the VACS 2015 report, 19% of Nigerian children experience sexual violence before the age of 13. Justina, a three-year-old girl child, became one of these statistics after being sexually assaulted by a stranger.
