On June 25th, I will discuss “Scaling CEA: Funding Models and Partnerships for Nationwide Expansion” with investors Elan Kramer, Generate; Gingee Prince, Enhanced Capital; Marc Khouzami, BMO; and Sue Yang-Krochmal, Antin Infrastructure Partners, during Indoor AgTech Innovation Summit in Chicago. I am excited to moderate this panel, with a group that covers a broad spectrum of investing strategies—infrastructure, mezzanine / project equity, PE / growth, and VC—and have an open and honest conversation at a time when the indoor farming sector is out of favor with most investors, despite some companies making progress building new facilities and moving closer to positive EBITDA. Our panel discussion will cover key questions, including: · How has your perspective on investing in the CEA sector changed during the past couple of years? Has this impacted your fund’s interest in investing into this sector going forward? · What are the biggest challenges CEA companies are facing for financing new indoor farms? Do you expect the equity capital markets to re-open for CEA companies in the near term, or will raising new equity capital remain challenging for the foreseeable future? · What type of financing structures need to emerge in CEA to enable companies to grow? What type of financial profile will companies need to achieve to be able to access these financing structures? · How can customers (grocery retailers, food service providers) better support CEA companies to enable them to access cheaper sources of capital? · What role can government entities (local, state and federal) play to help CEA companies access cheaper sources of capital? · As your portfolio companies look to grow, how important is it to have a strategic partner as part of the investor syndicate (established industry players, distributor, retail)? · There have been few sizeable company monetizations in AgTech sector to date; what gives you confidence these sectors provide good opportunities for strong investment returns (IPOs / M&A)? · How important is bankability in the indoor farming sector to move the industry from a niche area to competitive with outdoor farms? What needs to happen for indoor farms to be better candidates for project finance? · Looking into your crystal ball, where will the CEA sector be in 2030 in terms of competitive position against outdoor grown produce? If not competitive by 2030, when will CEA be competitive, if ever? #Lithuanian farm field management platform developer AgroSync has raised €140K from #Budapest-based Fiedler Capital. Founded in #Vilnius in 2023 by Lukas Grigaravičius and Karolis Paulikas, AgroSync is developing a platform that provides farmers with up-to-date information on soil health, climate conditions, plant well-being, and pest control. The startup also offers farmers professional consulting services. AgroSync uses multispectral analysis, which is based on the ability of a satellite camera to photograph the Earth’s surface and crops using different wavelengths of light (beyond the visible spectrum). The information obtained can reveal hidden stress zones, crop health, and water distribution patterns, and help create accurate nitrogen fertilization maps. Nitrogen fertilization maps can help farms save up to 20% on fertilizers by optimizing the distribution of productivity zones. Satellite images also allow the platform to track crop conditions over large areas, providing images of past seasons and current months, allowing plants to be assessed in all their conditions and growth stages. The startup will use the investment to further develop the platform.
