Our latest project has just been released: Becoming a Scientist: The Graphic Novel! The novel follows the #stories of the amazing #team members in the lab (or, at least, those team members who have been around since last October when we started this project!). We follow their story in becoming a scientist: the barriers they had to overcome, the #rolemodels who helped them on the way, and the #motivation that drove them to enter #STEM. This is a unique project for us, because it isn't about our #science. It is about us as #scientists. Where we came from, and how we got here. None of us were destined for science, yet somehow here we are, working together to better the world... Our amazing illustrator, Yulia Lapko, brings to life each person's story. We have Magda, daughter of Somali refugees, drawing strength from her mother's sacrifice and equally determined to help others in turn. We have Alvaro, who barely managed to get into school growing up in Peru, and has now made it to Cambridge with a ripper of an under-graduate project. James, who took a long and winding route, overcoming every disadvantage life gives a foster kid, and yet somehow beating the odds and now helping others succeed. Stevi made the transition from #patient to #researcher, and Tombi brings her mission from Zimbabwe to help the global #ubuntu. I realised, looking around the lab, that I could talk about how inspiring I find literally every person - so I put them all into a book! I draw #inspiration from these amazing team members. I could have written this story at any point over the past fifteen years - we have nearly 200 amazing alumni, each with their own unique story. I wrote these stories to provide role-models to anyone thinking about starting a #career in science. Science is not for the privileged few. Science is for anyone who has ever asked "why?", and anyone who is too stubborn to know when to stop asking! Take a look into these stories - if we can succeed in science, you can too! https://lnkd.in/d4UKNEZr

Hey, Geo-scientist! Have you settled on “I make maps” when explaining your research to friends and family? Watch this video to see why you shouldn’t—and how you should. Stop spending (all) your days stuck behind a laptop working on academic papers. Step out of the academic bubble and share your work with the world. This isn’t just for academics, though. As a one-person crew on the video-production side of Geoversity.io, I also tend to get caught up in the video-making process like a caveman. When you’re so familiar with the animations, B-roll, and interview footage, it can be tough to step back and see if the chosen clips actually convey what you’re aiming for. In my mind, I see the full context of every clip (including the moments that were cut off), which makes it harder to evaluate if the final edits fully make sense. So here’s me getting out of my bubble as well, asking for your honest feedback on this video. Does the whole package make sense if I want to inspire (aspiring) geo-scientists to look beyond academic publishing? Also, if you’d be open to giving feedback on drafts of future geo-related videos, please reach out. It would be great to have an extra pair of critical eyes in the production process to make the final edit better understood :-). https://lnkd.in/eJ6FyRcX

My dissertation research 🥰...Images unaltered ✔️ (My favorite part of my dissertation has been coding the history textbook images. They DO have a pattern and hidden messages. I analyzed and coded approximately 1,400 pages of texts, captions, and images 📖) #phdresearch #PhD #dissertation

Great news, everyone. I’m currently working on a brand new novel! Plot: Three high school students find themselves in a strange realm. A realm so strange, whenever a new visitor arrives, the lay of the land suddenly changes: new places are formed, and some vanish for the time being. Humans are not native, yet this realm hosts a manner of odd life forms with an array of personalities. Those who end up here forget about what happened before they got here, and as they journey to find their way back home, our three protagonists may struggle along the way. Though they are all students of the same school, they are unfamiliar with each other, for they’ve never interacted with nor met each other prior to ending up in this strange world. With no one but each other to trust, can their new found alliance aid them on their journey to find a way back home? Their journey will be easier said than done, as they face the unknown entities of this odd world, as well as their own inner demons… More art pieces will come up to introduce characters and other important aspects to the novel as I get closer to completing it! Be sure to follow me to stay updated if you’re interested when the novel is published! #novelproject #teaser #storyannouncement #fantasynovel #adventurenovel

We must teach kids to think logically! https://lnkd.in/gmRPf47x Since this article appeared in Scientific American, I have had lot of interesting feedback!! Motivated by this, I will be doing a few posts to explain the nuances in the argument made in the article. First off, I thought I will comment on "logic" vs "symbolic logic". The article argues: It is time that we start offering symbolic logic courses in high schools across the country. And yet, the title line does not use the word "symbolic" in the title. There are three ways of using logic to train our thinking: informal logic, symbolic logic, and recreational logic. Informal logic teaches how to evaluate arguments expressed in English. Formal logic introduces an algebra to manipulate and evaluate arguments. Recreation logic uses games such as Tic-Tac-Toe to develop logical thinking. What do you understand when someone says "logical thinking"?
