We have some exciting news to share! 🙌 We've been able to produce world’s first biodegradable plastic from CO2 emissions from waste incineration at our plant in Riihimäki, Finland! This is a remarkable milestone in our Carbon2x program and in our mission to rethink recycling and lead the way towards revolution of materials. “Captured carbon dioxide should be utilized as a new raw material instead of storing it underground or releasing it into the atmosphere when using fuel. Utilizing captured CO2 is a much more sustainable option in terms of tackling resource scarcity in the future. Whereas carbon capture and storage is a linear solution that does not address the growing material shortage, carbon capture and utilization promotes circular economy," says Tony Rehn, Head of the Carbon2x program. The lead in Europe for the circular economy is still Italian! This is confirmed by the 5th Report on the Circular Economy in Italy 2023: a report that judges the performance of the five largest economies in the European Union is based on seven indicators. In fact, the ranking takes into account the overall recycling rate of waste, the rate of use of material from recycling, resource productivity, the ratio of waste generation to material consumption, the share of energy from renewable sources in total gross energy consumption, repair and land consumption. ♻️ It is imperative to correct a prevalent misunderstanding: "Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is not recyclable". Contrary to this myth, EPS is entirely recyclable and serves as an instrumental component in the circular economy. Using sophisticated recycling methods, EPS can be converted into new, practical products, thereby reducing waste and enhancing environmental sustainability. 🔄 This erroneous belief undermines the genuine capacity of EPS to contribute to our European sustainability objectives. By bolstering the recycling infrastructure and raising public and industry awareness, the potential of EPS as a recyclable material can be fully realised. ➡️ We invite you to join our commitment to sustainability by endorsing and promoting EPS recycling initiatives. 📢 Key Recommendations on #CircularEconomy from ENZA's #100measures100days paper: Advancing the circular economy requires recognising waste as a resource and fostering circular business models to drive sustainability and competitiveness. Key recommendations include: ✔️ Waste-to-Energy should be recognised as a sustainable, affordable, and secure source of energy and secondary materials. ✔️ The Circular Economy Act must incentivise circular business models through supporting the EU-wide development of circularity hubs for SMEs and providing easily accessible funding through circularity vouchers. ✔️ Stronger enforcement mechanisms are needed to ensure that the waste hierarchy is respected, prioritising waste prevention, recycling, and energy recovery over landfilling. This will safeguard the role of Waste-to-Energy in managing non-recyclable waste, supporting both energy transition and circular economy goals. ✔️ Possibilities and markets to trade carbon removals should be established. ✔️ Secure fair competition on global markets for renewable EU products and ensure compliance with global trade rules and EU regulations for the import of goods to the internal market. 📑 Read ENZA's full recommendations for the first 100 days of the new European Commission here: https://lnkd.in/egKD54Wq
