When I tell people about my evolving journey as a coach, I get a broad spectrum of responses. They range from, “So, what do you teach?”, to, “Isn’t that therapy?” So, I decided to pen this article. It is not a definition of coaching. Rather it is what I have come to understand coaching to be. I will focus on the specific area of individual coaching. https://lnkd.in/d9fE2rFs

WHAT IS CREATIVE COACHING AND WHY CAN IT WORK? Sometimes words can fail us, we want to achieve something that can play a vital role making our lives better, happier and more rewarding. Sometimes we can’t vocalise what we want and need or quite define what is truly stopping us moving forward. It can seems too intangible or difficult to express. This is where creative coaching can help an individual gain clarity and find the tools to express themselves and gain progress. Our brains are separated into two hemispheres. The left hemisphere is vocal and enables speech. It is consistent, analytical and logical, It defines a topic by labelling, naming and categorising things. The right hemisphere is silent, it is where metaphor lives and where non-verbal communication occurs such as facial and hand gestures. It sees the world as flow, in constant flux and change and no experience is the same. For example a river flows but it is never the same from one moment to the next. The right hemisphere is where intuition and deduction lives and where insight occurs using images, patterns and instincts. It is open to interpretation and can suspend judgement. We don’t have to be artistic to use creativity and art to express what words cannot define. Creativity and art can work in a more intuitive space to enable a deeper level self awareness and allow transformation to occur We can create an image and keep it to refer to as a topic is explored to achieve a goal. Coaching is a thought provoking, client led process for anyone who has the desire and commitment for change. Coaching can lead to purposeful and long-lasting change in any and all areas of a individual life. Sometimes words can fail us, Through creative coaching we can achieve something that can play a vital role to make our lives better, happier ,and more rewarding. When someone constantly lacks time, they will lack time for coaching. When someone constantly lacks time, they will lack time to hire a coach. When someone constantly finds it difficult to deepen their connection with others, they will find it difficult to deepen their connection with a coach (similarly to what I wrote earlier this week). When someone constantly finds that work is uninspiring, they will find coaching uninspiring at some point. This is not to say that coaching is something special and they must find time and money for coaching and they must generate trust and inspiration. No, my point is that even though coaching is not a typical conversation and often it is about themes and topics not discussed elsewhere, people are in a coaching conversation with the brains that hold all those cognitive and affective patterns that create reality as they experience it. We, coaches and clients, just need to be prepared because it's only natural that whatever they find lacking, missing, frustrating, or inhibiting most likely will show up in the milieu of the coaching relationship. What makes it different though when it comes to coaching is that we both, clients and coaches, can deliberately assume two roles: of those who experience and recreate a pattern and of those who observe and analyze it.

This week, think about two types of coaching. Giving tactical advice in the moment (like a coach walking along the pool), and coaching later with reflective coaching. Reviewing a recent situation or trend with the hopes of improving the pattern for the next time. And remember - you don’t need to announce that you are coaching for it to be effective; it is better if you don’t. You can learn more about these two approaches in this Rob Luke, BHSc, MA article > https://lnkd.in/eYKMr_Yf
