When I still hear strong opposition from German and French landlords to the construction of wind farms and highspeed railway lines, this is the perfect article to illustrate the European pendant to it... Sheer NIMBYism... If we know the environment collapse we're facing, we know the alternatives that are needed: - High speed trains instead of flying; - Wind plants instead of coal / nuclear; - new affordable housing if prices are to be kept under control.

via High Country News "This past June, for the fourth year, the #YakamaNation and Columbia Riverkeeper hosted #HanfordJourney at #HanfordReach. “Oftentimes, when we talk about the river, or protecting the river, we’re not around the river,” said Washines. Hanford Journey is a #cultural event designed to get people out on the #land, reminding them it’s more than just a #radioactive wasteland. The two-day event includes a guided boat tour of the Reach and #educational presentations about the clean-up. But federal cleanup has been so slow and expensive that some #government officials have suggested abandoning the site. Just days before the Hanford Journey, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sent tribal leaders a new report listing three possible cleanup strategies, each with a 290-year timeframe — the agency’s best estimate for how long it will take #strontium90 to decay to what they consider acceptable levels in the aquifer. “The upshot is, they’re going to wait for 300 years,” Serres said" Western Leaders Network Cultural Survival Native American Rights Fund Indigenous Environmental Network Truman Center for National Policy Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists KUOW Public Radio NPR OPB City of Toppenish City of Yakima City of Richland City of Pasco MacArthur Foundation Open Society Foundations Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Yield Giving Center for American Progress Climate Power Education Fund Colorado School of Mines Stanford Energy Nuclear Threat Initiative Global Zero Movement Generation Justice and Ecology Project Zero Hour United States Senate National Caucus of Environmental Legislators National Governors Association Environmental Working Group Pacific Environment Philanthropy Northwest Environmental Law & Policy Center

via States Newsroom & Alex Baumhardt "Dan Serres, advocacy director for the City of Portland and The City of Hood River -based #nonprofit conservation group Columbia Riverkeeper, said such leaks are not only devastating for the river’s health but are a violation of the federal government’s 1855 treaty with the Nez Perce Tribe, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon and #Yakama tribes. The tribes ceded millions of acres of their land to the U.S. government in return for hunting and fishing rights at traditional sites in perpetuity. The possibility of thousands of gallons of the waste moving through the state as a liquid, rather than in a solid form outlined in previous plans, are among the parts of the proposal that most alarm State of Oregon Gov. If you are an environmental professional, or work in the clean energy space, May 5-9th will be an amazing week to be in City of Minneapolis. Both the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and the National Association of Environmental Professionals will be holding their annual conferences during the same week, just a few blocks apart. It will be an exciting opportunity for crossover, and I am hopeful the two worlds collide! #environmentalprofessionals #cleanenergy #environmentalscience #climatechange #windenergy #renewableenergy #hydrogen #decarbonization #climatescience #permitting #solarenergy #energypolicy #climatepolicy #Minneapolis #NAEP #NEPA #ACP #energytransmission

A proposed direct air capture project, potentially the largest in the U.S., has sparked mixed reactions in West Texas. While some see it as a step forward in fighting climate change, others express concerns about its impact on the community and environment. Ramanan Krishnamoorti, vice president of energy and innovation at the University of Houston, said the public should be aware of the precautions that Oxy and the EPA put in place should issues with the well arise, including contamination, seismic activity and leaks in the well. via KPBS The California Department of Public Health reports monthly on #radiation levels at the site. Southern California Edison (SCE) said it closely monitors the safety of the storage containers, along with coastal erosion and sea-level rise. It’s also advocating for the federal government to remove the waste. The #NuclearWastePolicyAct required the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) start accepting #nuclearwaste from companies like Edison by 1998. That didn’t happen. Manuel Camargo, Southern California Edison’s principal manager for strategic planning, said utilities #sued and #won. The United States has paid about $9 billion in #damages as of September 2020, according to the Department of Energy. “As a result, all #taxpayers in the U.S., whether you ever received a #kilowatt of #nuclearpower or not, are now having to pay for this on site storage that we're doing that you never should have had to implement,” Camargo said. Energy security is a high order priority for any nation. It’s a critical strategic enabler of national resilience. Why do we talk about energy security like it’s a nice-to-have, vague concept ? In reality, it is a fundamental building block for a strong economy, thereby a strong industrial base and by direct extension a strong defence posture. If renewable energy had delivered on the promise of a couple of years ago, we might not be having this conversation. https://lnkd.in/gByJhvAZ https://lnkd.in/gsFbm5dE https://lnkd.in/gfgsPcB2 https://lnkd.in/gdGzTwRh But it didn’t…so here we are. Australia can buy as many tanks, ships, planes and missiles as it likes but without energy reserves to power and sustain them, they are useless. Giving up on energy security is giving up on the Defence of the nation. If the pro-environment commonwealth government is saying that more gas fields seem to be needed to address the current energy shortfall (no matter how distasteful and troubling that may be) it must be a serious issue ? https://lnkd.in/gZnREWCy https://lnkd.in/gqCUw9SG No question,we need better long term energy mix / solutions as we move away from our traditional energy sources. If we don’t want to develop new gas fields, that’s fine, what is the alternative that doesn’t compromise this nations ability to Defend itself ? It’s a reasonable question. We might all think that is pretty important issue in a few short years. Of course…what this country really needs, strategically, is renewed development of its (modest) oil reserves to guarantee secure, in-country fuel supplies for 95% of everything that moves in the ADF. But that’s a different discussion for another day…

🌟 Today in Native American History: Honoring Indigenous Resilience 🌱 On September 11, 1853, Chief Seattle of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes shared these words during treaty negotiations: “The Earth does not belong to us; we belong to the Earth. All things are connected, like the blood that unites one family.” As we reflect on Chief Seattle’s powerful message, we are reminded of our responsibility to protect the planet. At Red Power Energy, we continue this legacy by championing renewable energy solutions that align with Indigenous values of environmental stewardship. Learn how we’re turning these words into action: redpowerenergy.com #NativeAmericanHistory #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #IndigenousWisdom #SolarPower #TribalEnergy #RenewableEnergy #RedPowerEnergy
