Brittany Young has been a Family Worker at our Merrick Head Start / Early Head Start site for three years as of this month. She was nominated for this award for all of the ways she consistently brings positive enthusiasm to not only her case management duties, but also when assisting her co-workers in many ways such as covering classroom breaks, filling in as a school bus monitor, and in particular helping with technology issues -- while also managing an additional caseload due to our current shortage of Family Workers. Thank you, Brittany, and congratulations for being named our Employee of the Month for November!

In an elevator speech, How quickly & accurately could you explain your purpose in business or non-profit or sports while holding a burning match between your two fingers? It is too easy to drift with too much information that somebody doesn't want to hear and we don't even recognize the signals. but if you can cover your point with the least number of words and then let your listener ask for more information, now you've engaged at least their interest and maybe also their imagination.

We created our performance scorecard to be transparent about what it means for us to do a good job as a grantmaker, and whether we're doing a good job by that standard. One of the key indicators that helps us answer these important questions is: "Bring as many perspectives as possible into decision making." We’ve made progress on this indicator. This reflects an intentional effort on our part to consider the diversity of perspectives among decision makers at the staff, board and community selector level. Currently, 63% of our staff and board members and community selectors who participate in grant and Fellows selection self-identify as Black, Indigenous or people of color. Learn more about why this key indicator is important to us: https://bit.ly/4c8kBM3

Exciting news! Workforce Solutions Capital Area has been selected as one of Texas Mutual Insurance Company’s 2024 grant partners, and we’re proud to collaborate with them on this transformative initiative. It’s hard not to feel disillusioned when the people tasked with caring for vulnerable individuals seem more focused on collecting accolades than tackling real issues. Awards like “Most Outstanding Plan Management” sound impressive, but who decides these winners? Is it about real impact on the lives of PWD or simply a closed-loop of providers patting each other on the back? PWD deserve transparency. They deserve to know who is voting, what criteria are in play, and whether the nominees’ work truly benefits those it should. These events often appear to be about optics—providers celebrating providers—while sweeping real problems under the rug. Let’s talk about the energy and resources poured into these award nights. Imagine if that same enthusiasm went into directly improving services, raising standards, or advocating for fair treatment and funding. Instead of recognition for a job done, there should be a focus on setting higher standards for a job well done. It’s painful to see the NDIS sector turning into a place where “flash over substance” takes priority. And it raises a pointed question: are these awards really for PWD, or just a way for providers to feel good about themselves? Real improvement and genuine impact for PWD should be the ultimate goal—not another shiny trophy on the shelf. #AwardsOrAction #PWDDeserveBetter #BehindTheTrophy #StopTheBackPats #FlashOverSubstance #ImpactOverImage #TransparencyForPWD #ServiceNotSelf #WhoVotesForWho #BeyondTheAwards #RealChangeNow #ServeNotShow #NoMoreLipService #PWDFirst #WalkTheTalk #MakeItMatter #NotYourTrophy #ActionForPWD #BeyondRecognition #PeopleOverPrestige
