The Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the reconstruction of six bridges following a structural audit of 224 bridges in the Pune division. Of these, two -bridges in Satara and Solapur have been demolished and are currently under construction, while four more in Pune district, including Maval and Talegaon, are set for rebuilding. Notably, a British-era bridge in Solapur is being replaced with a new structure from Karmala to Konarchincholi. Additionally, an under-construction bridge over the Bhima river, connecting Pune and Ahmednagar districts, was dismantled due to construction faults and weak foundations, forcing locals to use boats for crossing. The PWD's initiative follows the collapse of the 106-year-old Savitri river bridge near Mahad in 2016, which prompted an extensive audit. This led to recommendations for the reconstruction of 1,768 bridges last year, with another 251 bridges identified for reconstruction this year, totaling 2,019 bridges. Last year, the PWD completed the reconstruction of 200 medium and small bridges. Dear Structural Design Engineers, What is the one thing that gives us the most satisfaction? It is when our Designed Structure become a tangible reality and stands Tall and Proud. Right? BUT!!! The road to innovation in construction isn’t easy (understatement of the year!). The risk-to-benefit ratio in our industry is so skewed to unfavorable side that it is usually preferred to follow the norms. That is why a structural engineer could rarely experience the 4th stage in their Project (Refer Image). If you’re reading this far, I owe you a quick overview of this boundary-pushing project. So, here’s the scoop: Currently rising in Nagpur, Maharashtra, is a 2.26 km flyover – but not your everyday structure! This one is built using Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) with jaw-dropping numbers like 155 MPa in compressive strength and a tensile strength of 8 MPa. For India, this is huge (we don’t even have our own design code for UHPFRC yet!). So, yes, we’re truly venturing into new territory here. Stay tuned for PART 2 where I'll dive deeper into UHPFRC.
