True innovation respects and nurtures the natural world. On this World Nature Conservation Day, we pledge to ensure that progress does not come at the cost of our planet's future. Nature conservation is crucial for sustaining life on Earth. Our planet’s ecosystems provide essential services such as clean air, water, and food, which are vital for our survival. Without preserving these natural resources, the delicate balance of our environment is disrupted, threatening all forms of life, including our own. Unfortunately, the current state of nature conservation is alarming. According to the World Wildlife Fund, we have lost nearly 60% of the world’s wildlife populations in the last four decades. The Global Forest Watch reports that the world lost 3.75 million hectares of tropical primary rainforests in 2023 alone, which is an area equivalent to the size of Iceland. These figures highlight the urgent need for immediate action to protect our natural heritage. Deforestation, in particular, poses a severe threat to our ecosystem. It leads to habitat loss, diminishing biodiversity, and contributes to climate change by increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. A recent investigation revealed that a major furniture giant has been sourcing wood from European Union’s pristine forests, causing irreversible damage to these vital ecosystems to meet the global demand for furniture. In response to such challenges, STEER World is pioneering solutions to combat deforestation. By developing and promoting nano-compounded affordable material that can substitute wood for all practical purposes, STEER World aims to reduce the dependence on natural forests. We need to talk about a Landscape Restoration Industry in New York Today marks the start of the #ClimateWeekNYC. We are excited to participate in inspiring lectures, meetings, innovative initiatives and panels sessions from dedicated organisations in the field nature based solutions and climate adaptation, such as the Rainforest Alliance, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, The Nature Conservancy Maliasili, Salesforce, 1t.org (World Economic Forum), Conservation International The Rockefeller Foundation Bezos Earth Fund Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People IUCN, Climate-KIC WWF UNDP LGT Venture Philanthropy IKEA Foundation Landscape Finance Lab and many many others. My plea here is that we need a collaborative approach and stronger long-term cooperation between local organisations, NGOs, governments, corporations and the financial world to ensure that this trillion-dollar promise of a landscape restoration industry comes into being, as previously published in Forbes. We’re committed to enhancing biodiversity and making both our existing homes and new developments more sustainable. We’re making a difference by working closely with qualified ecologists and Natural England to safeguard wildlife at our new Webber’s Piece development. From hazel trees to nesting boxes, we’re providing habitats for protected species to make sure they can continue to live safely, and we’ve also relocated dormice and reptiles to new protected locations. We’re also working on a new Magna Homes and Estate Standard to develop a cross-business approach to define how our homes and estates will be improved and developed to create homes fit for the future. The standard will include provision to meet, and aim to exceed, the 10% Biodiversity Net Gain standard. Aisla Exley, Sustainability Business Partner at Magna, has been working hard to make sure that sustainability is considered in every corner of the business. She said: “Magna is working to embed sustainable practices across our work. Improving the use of land and increasing biodiversity has benefits not only for the environment but for our customers and communities, making our homes and estates great places to live.” Looking to the future, we plan to retrofit many of our existing homes, continue to construct affordable housing in a sustainable way, and look at our land to identify sites where we can enhance the biodiversity to create greener communities.
