The Rabat Process and Khartoum Process Dialogues have an exciting week ahead! Our Joint High-level Meeting with representatives from both Dialogues will take place in Lisbon on 16 and 17 October, alongside a series of other significant migration-related events hosted in Lisbon throughout the week as part of the Migration and Mobility Dialogue (MMD) Support Programme. These meetings will play a crucial role in shaping future migration policies and fostering cooperation within Africa and between Africa and Europe. How does the Grant Facility fit within the larger migration and mobility governance frameworks existing within Africa and between Africa and the EU? 🌍 Since the 2000s, the #EU and #Africa have been engaging in an extensive and comprehensive #dialogue on migration and mobility, making it a fundamental pillar of their longstanding #partnership. ✅ At the 6th EU-AU Summit in February 2022, the EU and the AU reaffirmed their commitment to improving governance, management and cooperation on #migration and #mobility, both within Africa and between Africa and the EU as part of their Joint Vision for 2030. 🤝 To sustain a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership, it is crucial to establish and foster dialogue with different actors that promote a comprehensive understanding of migration issues. 3/4 🔦 MMD Unpacked: A Closer Look at the Khartoum Process After the JVAP Follow-up and the Rabat Process, in this part three of our MMD Unpacked series we are diving into another pillar of the Migration and Mobility Dialogue (MMD) Support Programme: the Khartoum Process. An essential objective of our Grant Facility is to generate insights, research inputs, and policy recommendations that contribute to the Dialogues’ discussions and priority-setting, so let's explore this regional collaboration platform! 📍 Established in 2014 during the Ministerial Conference in Rome, the EU-Horn of Africa Migration Route Initiative, better known as Khartoum Process, is a regional migration dialogue bringing together countries along the migration route between the Horn of Africa and Europe, and key partners.  🌍 The Khartoum Process serves as a platform for consultation for 40 participating states and key stakeholders, including the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). It regularly organises meetings at the political and technical level. 💡 Following the Rome Declaration, the dialogue initially focused on tackling  human trafficking and smuggling of people. Since then, the dialogue has expanded its scope to address issues related to the five domains of the JVAP (and beyond!) due to the ever-changing nature of migration challenges. ✅ It has established a continuous regional dialogue to enhance cooperation on migration and mobility between countries of origin, transit, and destination, and supports participating states in identifying and implementing concrete projects. Several regional initiatives also contribute to the implementation of the priorities and objectives of the KP, such as the Better Migration Management (BMM) programme and the Regional Operational Centre in support of the Khartoum Process and the AU-Horn of Africa Initiative (ROCK). ⏬ To learn more, check out the Khartoum Process page and its website https://lnkd.in/d9xqibm8! #MMD #migration #mobility #dialogue #development  #Africa  #Europe  #partnership #hornofafrica

How can smooth border crossings increase prosperity within the country? The example of Namibia and Botswana shows it: The two countries simplified their mutual border controls in 2023. They allowed their citizens to use their national identity cards as travel documents between the two countries. 🤝🏻 The result: fast, smooth, and safe travel between the two countries, which in turn promotes cultural and economic exchange. “By enabling smoother border crossings, both countries expect to boost their economies, while at the same time making life easier for many of their citizens,” says Thomas Morian, Vice President of International Relations at Veridos. “It’s a first for southern Africa, and a catalyst for trade in the region.” 🌍 Our subsidiary Veridos, the world's leading provider of integrated identity solutions, supported Namibia and Botswana in harmonizing their procedures and documents.
