Looking back at the past year feels like a rollercoaster ride. Graduating college was exciting, and getting a job felt like a big win. But then, unexpectedly, I got let go, and that shook my confidence. I've been following Ryan Estis for almost a year now, and his advice has really helped me grow. His stories and ideas make me think about how I can keep getting better every day. This post of his really hit home for me. It reminded me that it's okay to be imperfect and vulnerable when we're trying something new. Stories like John Mayer's show that taking a chance on ourselves, even when we're scared of failing, can lead to amazing things. Being open to feedback is key to improving, too. As I keep looking for jobs and working on my personal brand, I'm reminded that it's important to step out of my comfort zone and take risks. New Post: Dexter Holland of The Offspring Talks New Album ‘Supercharged,’ 30 Years of ‘Smash’ & More - https://lnkd.in/gyTqiXsp - The Offspring is gearing up to release their 11th studio album, Supercharged, and to celebrate, frontman Dexter Holland discussed the making of the project with Billboard’s Rania Aniftos. “We’ve done ten albums or something, so it’s like, what can you offer? You want to do something that you haven’t done before, but you don’t want to go so far out there that it feels strange to people who like the band,” Holland shared of the album’s inspiration. “It just felt like going kind of a little bit more direct was the right way to approach this record. I just wanted something that was energetic and really upbeat and just slamming in your face.” He continued, “I think the idea is that you should always think for yourself, don’t take anything at face value, don’t do something just because someone says you should do it and go out and find your own path.” The band is also celebrating 30 years since their seminal 1994 album, Smash, which featured enduring hits like “Come Out and Play,” “Gotta Get Away” and more. “We’re really proud of it. We feel very lucky. I mean, geez, lightning struck and somehow we were there,” Holland recalls. “The album was made very cheaply, we didn’t have the money. You’ve heard the term DIY, right? We did this ourselves, but it wasn’t a choice. We had to make our own t-shirts, we were gluing our own album covers. No label was going to do it. No one was going to sign us. No one was going to book our tours. We grew up that way and it was fun. It was all a big adventure. New Post: More Hits Debut in the Hot 100’s Top 10, But They Also Burn Out More Quickly - https://lnkd.in/gTZvaJT5 - Spring of 2022 brought out the superstars: Over the course of three consecutive weeks, Future released I Never Liked You, Bad Bunny put out Un Verano Sin Ti, and Kendrick Lamar returned from a five-year break with Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. Future and Lamar launched four songs apiece in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 during their albums’ debut weeks, while Bad Bunny scored three. Nine of them fell out of the top 10 in their second week on the chart. A month later, Future’s “Wait for U,” a melancholy hip-hop ballad with Drake and Tems, served as the only lasting reminder of this blockbuster spurt in the top 10. That July, Steve Lacy carved out a notably different path on the Hot 100. He is not nearly as well-known as Future, Bad Bunny, or Lamar; as a result, his breezy new wave single “Bad Habit” debuted on the Hot 100 in the lowest possible position. It climbed the chart for five weeks before reaching the top 10. It then remained there for 18 weeks, ultimately peaking at No. 1. Songs like “Bad Habit” are becoming hard to find — 75% of 2024’s top 10 hits debuted in that lofty environment as of the third week of July. Ironically, though, the tracks that launch on the upper reaches of the Hot 100, like Future’s “Puffin On Zootiez” and Lamar’s “N95,” tend to be easy come, easy go. They don’t remain as long as the hits which take time to get into that exclusive atmosphere. Since 2000, the average single that debuts in the top 10 hangs there for roughly six weeks. In contrast, tracks that take two to eight weeks to ascend to that position linger for more than 11 weeks. This dynamic has become more extreme in the heart of the streaming era. Since 2015, singles that start out in the top 10 last 6.3 weeks on average, while tracks that take two to four weeks to reach the top 10 last more than twice as long — 12.7 weeks. 🎶🎸Wish you were here… I was part of the dramatic society in college, where discussing plays and short stories threadbare was our intellectual stimulation. There was something electric about those debates, the way we dissected the works of Jean-Paul Sartre and Saadat Hasan Manto. And of course, there was music to feed our brains as well—one of my favorite bands, Pink Floyd. "Wish You Were Here" was the anthem of our reflective moments, while "Another Brick in the Wall" had us singing with our lungs bursting, defying everything that felt confining or conventional. But here’s a little-known story about Pink Floyd that always stuck with me. Before they became the iconic band that still makes hearts throb with their eternal music, they were known as "The Tea Set." It wasn’t until they entered a competition that a sudden twist changed everything. Imagine the scene… A band, ready to perform, finds out another group with the exact same name is also competing. Panic? Perhaps. But what followed was a moment of pure, quick-thinking creativity. Syd Barrett, their frontman, didn’t have time to deliberate. He drew inspiration from two blues musicians he admired—Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, both masters of their craft in the genre that would later influence so many greats. Pink and Floyd were artists who lived their lives in the rhythm and blues of the American South, crafting songs that were raw, real, and deeply human. Their names, fused together in a moment of necessity, became a symbol of timeless artistry. It’s funny how a name born out of necessity can end up defining something so eternal. Pink Floyd—born from a fleeting moment, now a legend! This story always makes me wonder… What makes someone or something story-worthy? Who do we look to for inspiration when we’re forging our own paths? The truth is, few people or moments inspire the kind of remembrance that lives on, but those who do often guide us in choosing our destiny, just as Pink Anderson and Floyd Council did for Syd Barrett. So, can we become story-worthy? Can we inspire others in a way that lasts? It’s a question worth pondering. Ever had a moment like that? One that changed everything? With Taylor Swift’s album out, and with it some very lukewarm takes, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we review art. In the rush to be on time and the very first, a lot of half-cooked, shallow and undeveloped writing has appeared. It always happens when big artists release something. It’s not the writers’ fault in my opinion — it’s the way the system works. You have to be immediate or it’s not worth doing at all. How much thoughtful reflection can you do when you have a deadline in 2 hours. That may be the way the system works, but it’s certainly NOT how art works. I'm not “in” music, I'm “in” comedy. And obviously things are different with global superstars like TS than they are with character comedians doing their first Edinburgh Fringe show in a literal cave. But when it comes to critiquing any kind of art, I think it really benefits a writer to consider the impact of what they're saying beyond the day they publish it. When you really consider that what you write is going to be online and available to read forever and ever amen, being thorough and thoughtful suddenly become more important than being first. Also, way more valuable to readers and, if we're talking about early career artists, can actually be helpful to them as well. As a reviewer, I sort of hate doing it. The immediate reaction to a work of art is completely different to what you feel when you sit with it for a while. With live comedy, you have the urgency of having to publish reviews as soon as humanly possible. But I think there's also room for having reviews that are more considered, in depth and sensitive to that part of you that needs time to process. So that's how I'm doing it. And I guarantee a lot of those still-frozen-in-the-middle Taylor Swift takes are going to age badly...

In 2007, something extraordinary happened in the Washington DC Metro Station. On a cold January morning, one of the world’s greatest violinists, Joshua Bell, stood at the entrance of the station, dressed in casual clothes, playing six intricate pieces for about 45 minutes. Just two days earlier, Bell had performed the same pieces at a sold-out theater in Boston, where tickets averaged $100 each. As he played, around 2,000 people passed through the station, most of them rushing to work. After four minutes, a middle-aged man briefly slowed down to listen but quickly moved on. Another four minutes passed before a woman tossed a dollar into his violin case without stopping. At ten minutes, a young boy tried to pause and listen, but his mother hurried him along. In fact, this same scene repeated several times—children stopping to admire the music, only to be pulled away by their parents. In total, only six people stopped for more than a few seconds to listen to one of the world’s most talented musicians. Around 20 people threw money into his case, and Bell collected just $32 by the time he finished playing. When he stopped, there was no applause, no recognition. Just silence. What no one realized was that they had just witnessed an unannounced performance by a musical genius. The experiment, organized by The Washington Post, was a test of perception, priorities, and human behavior. In a rushed, everyday setting, would people recognize beauty? Would they stop to appreciate one of the world’s finest talents if it appeared in an unexpected context? The results were eye-opening. The experiment highlighted how often we are so caught up in the pace of life that we miss the extraordinary, even when it’s right in front of us. It makes you wonder: how many other moments of beauty or brilliance do we miss as we rush through life? What wonders are we blind to because we’re too busy to pause? Perhaps the lesson is simple: slow down, take a moment to observe, and don’t let the beauty of life pass you by. #PerceptionMatters #LifeLessons #Inspiration
