🗓️ It's cold outside, yet still so many young people have nowhere to sleep night after night 🥶 re:sustain is gearing up, alongside the wider industry, for this year's LandAid SleepOut 💤🌙, an incredible annual initiative dedicated to raising vital funds to support young people throughout the UK without a place to call home 🏠 David Harvey-Evers, Katie Whipp, Finlay Milliner and I will be getting a taste for the night's elements across two cities: #Bristol and #London. Join us as we take a stand against youth homelessness - it really is amazing what the industry can achieve when it works together 🤝 This issue is especially close to my heart as 5% of homeless people are veterans - a number which rose 14% in 2022 - no one who has served their country should be in this position, without the support of their family, military and social network. Op Fortitude aimed to remove veterans sleeping on the streets by the end of 2023 and the Government has committed to ending rough sleeping by the end of 2024. Minister for Community Development, Integration and Charities, Joe O’Brien, has announced (Tuesday, 05 November 2024) an increase in funding for the vast majority of Community Services Programme (CSP) supported organisations. The revised funding rates to be applied from 1st January 2025 will see: ⬆ an increase of €1,850 in the annual contribution per full-time equivalent post to organisations categorised as having a high funding need; and ⬆ a €1,755 increase in the annual contribution per full-time equivalent post for CSP organisations categorised as having a medium funding need. ➡ No change is proposed for the small number of organisations in the low funding category, these are organisations identified as having the strongest earning potential and operating in less disadvantaged areas. https://lnkd.in/evXu9QWX

Matter is Riding to End Youth Homelessness On November 15th, we’re joining the Healesville Tour de PIF: Tour for Homeless Youth - a cycling challenge dedicated to raising funds to provide young Australians facing homelessness with a safe, secure home. Every night, 46,000 young people experience homelessness and half of them are turned away from accommodation services. We can’t stop our important work now - will you help us? Based on the 2023 Slavery Index, we think Croydon may have had around 700 people in modern slavery, and this number is growing year on year. Nationally, in 2023 alone numbers rose to 16,938 reported victims nationally. Modern slavery has to stop now. Last year at CCAT we set a goal to ensure that we could continue our work of raising awareness of the horrors of modern slavery into 2024. We did succeed with winning two small funding bids. These grants allowed us to progress in ways we hadn’t thought we would. We are so grateful our plans went bigger than expected, and that’s because of your help. We are so pleased to have you as part of our support team! Together we can do more. As you know, we are growing, and this means we need more to do even more. In the past, supporters like you have helped us with small donations, medium and even a couple of big donations including channel swims, and many other wonderful ways of helping us raise funds. CCAT is in an exciting phase of growth, and we’d love you to help us be able to ‘Spring into Action’ as soon as we possibly can. This week we’re celebrating #SmallCharityWeek! Did you know that 96% of all charities in the UK are small charities? RESTART Lives is proud to be one of those 🎉 We may be small, but we make a huge impact! With a lean and agile team we: -Take on over 30 new guests for in depth case work every quarter - Manage an overall caseload of over 60 guests per quarter - Serve over 14000 hot meals a year - Run weekly football skills sessions - Offer multiple one to one therapy slots per week - Put funding behind team training and staff development By being a small charity, it means we can adjust our ways of working as needed, when needed, so we’re always giving our guests the support they require. From a friendly chat over dinner at our drop in, to finding employment or education opportunities, to supporting guests with their move into permanent accommodation, our team supports our guests in a multitude of ways. We know that being agile as a small charity is a major help in supporting our most vulnerable communities, and quite frankly we wouldn’t want it any other way. This small charity week, we’re celebrating some of our recent successes, like our voter registration drive ahead of the upcoming election. Even without a permanent address, everyone has the right to have their say on the decisions that affect all of us. We’re immensely proud that our registration drive saw guests sign up both to vote for London mayor and in the coming General Election!  We also released our letter to the new government with our key asks to address homelessness. The expertise and insights of small charities like ours need to be utilised to help guide future change. You can read our open letter on our website or in our previous post. Hello LinkedIn friends! I'd be really grateful if you would share Justlife Foundation's post with your networks. They need to secure a minimum of £12,500 in pledges by the end of August to be eligible for this year's The Big Give Christmas Challenge, their main annual community fundraising campaign. The scheme means that all money raised over the campaign week in December is DOUBLED. Times are economically tough for charities right now and to lose the opportunity to participate in the Christmas Challenge would be devastating for Justlife and the people they work with. Just a little bit about Justlife...... Justlife Foundation supports people who are experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation, making their experience of housing vulnerability short, safe and healthy. They achieve this through frontline services in Brighton and Manchester providing holistic, person-centred support which improves health, builds life skills and empowers people to move on from homelessness. Alongside this, they carry out national research and policy work to identify and advocate for much-needed long-term solutions to hidden homelessness, to effect changes in policy and practice locally and nationally that will improve the experiences of people living in temporary accommodation across England. “Without Justlife I think I would be in jail or worse by now. To say they helped me in time of need is an understatement", “Justlife is an absolutely amazing charity, and helped to save my life for sure." There are now 117,450 households including 151,630 children experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation (TA), a historic high. Homeless funding/support is predominantly focused on rough sleepers, with staggeringly few resources aimed at people in TA – even though there are – and will continue to be - far more people in TA than rough sleeping in England. Therefore, the vast majority of individuals entering TA are likely to get trapped there, watching their mental/physical health, and hope for the future deteriorate. Justlife is determined to help people in TA have a brighter future Simon Gale Christa Maciver Esther Sweeney

On average we receive 20 applications a week for life-changing backyard studios, from specialist support services trying to help young people avoid leaving home too early. They know the extra space of a studio will ease pressure in the household (from overcrowding or other challenges), keep the young person connected to family, friends, community and education. The young person's trajectory towards homelessness, out of home care, youth justice, educational disruption, limited opportunity has a chance of being steered instead towards a much brighter future - saving lives, saving taxpayer funds. Sadly, of the 20 applications per week, we are only able to offer a studio to one every 2 weeks. One-off Government funding for this year enables us to assist one applicant every 3 weeks and the extra assistance we provide is thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners. As I walk past the rough sleepers on the way into the office in the city, I often wonder what happens to the young people in the 39 households who miss out on the hope of a studio every fortnight, and those who don’t even make it to an application with us.  Evidence tells us that half of the rough sleepers first became homeless when young and they are the most likely to become entrenched in adult homelessness. Studios are such a simple and effective early intervention. There is good work being done to assist people off the street, one at a time, on a path to try and recover from the damage of often decades of homelessness. However, too little is being done to stop them being immediately replaced by the wave of people being swept towards entrenched homelessness. Kids Under Cover has some bold plans to disrupt more of these trajectories at an early age, to give young people the best chance of completing their education and reaching their true potential.  We will reveal our plans in the coming weeks to scale up our impact way beyond the 1,000 young people we currently house each night.
