"A gap year is not a year off. It’s a way to develop yourself and your skills before taking the next step in your education or career." Taken from the UK National Careers Service homepage, the sentence makes an important point. Whether you call it an anno sabbatico, boşlukyılı, année de césure or a zwischenjahr, a Gap Year is time out for learning and developing. Alejandro is a Geological Engineer who took some time out to study English with Kaplan. He gives three compelling reasons why studying abroad is a great way to spend time out. #kaplangapyear #kaplanannosabbatico #kaplanzwischenjahr #kaplanboşlukyılı #kaplanañosabático #kaplanannéedecésure #anysabàtic

Keeping international Talents in Denmark 🚀 Fantastic initiative on "Young professionals". In my opinion, WE as Denmark, companies and organizations need to start "way ahead". Once students are graduated and have found no job, getting no "unemployment benefits" as A-kasse seems not to give access ... Students may have no other option but leave. I have just talked with a temp employee, that used to be a student worker (she is from Germany). No moaning on legislations, plain talk, we have a need for international talents in Denmark and we better show an interest - during their studies, but even more so, when they have finalized their education in Denmark. In my opinion, this will guarantee the best "pack back" to Denmark and keeping motivated talents within the country.

Always great to see our incredible university partners, new and old friends at the The Forum on Education Abroad Career Integrated Learning Conference. Athens was an amazing backdrop for the experience this year. Shout out to Melissa Torres, Kate Moore, Ed.D., Cynthia Engel, Mario Vela, the Forum planning committee, and hosts at College Year in Athens for welcoming Sage Corps. Looking forward to getting to work with our partners and excited to see our progress together in advance of the 2025 CIGL conference. A few takeaways: 1) more universities are seeing the value in professional abroad experiences as part of study abroad programs for their students - the link to employability is far stronger; 2) Specifically, career integrated abroad programs offer an ROI around employability for students because of the specific skills and competencies gained - but only if students can articulate those outcomes to prospective employers. 3) we need to bring more career centers (it was great to see some of you at the conference), as well as employers into this conversation going forward. I would also like to hear more from students - I believe we can unlock some of the 90% of college students who, statistically, will not study abroad before graduation if they are presented with global work experience opportunities. 4) To that point, many students go to college with the primary goal of landing their first full-time job. Professional abroad programs, opposed to traditional study abroad programs seem to attract move diverse students. My conversations with other providers and university partners this week confirmed that unlike traditional study abroad (70% white women), career integrated abroad programs better-reflect the true diversity of college student populations. At Sage Corps for example, we see 52/48 male/female, and 50% of students identify as non-white. I'd love to dig into the data more on #4 - perhaps we could collect data from providers and university programs and then look to present the results for CIGL 2025?

Somehow, this year's SMW left me with a really deep impression of MPA's CE Mr Teo after he gave his speech in the Accelerating Digitalisation & Decarbonisation conference, and I couldn't have felt more certain of the direction that I'm heading towards as a non-maritime background student. I feel that the industry leaders are promising, and so are the many contributors who have collectively made it so. Just by looking at the amount of initiatives and number of innovative projects that one of the biggest industry player (MPA for this instance) is working on and we know that there are going to be way more prospects to this industry. (Like you would be wondering omg what has maritime got to do with the space domain?🤔😂) But yes, MPA is developing a Satellite Resource Management Platform (SRMP) to capture satellite images for time-critical missions quickly. (Read more from www.mpa.gov.sg) The sheer amount of opportunities available in this industry for those who are eager is unimaginable, especially for those who unfortunately do not get enough exposure to the maritime industry. I am always gratitude towards how accommodating the industry has been towards me and am impelled to put-forth the same conviction with my fellow peers. Cheers~
#𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐒𝐆 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 Our youths, who will become our next generation of leaders, play an instrumental role in shaping our maritime future. Nelson Mandela had once said that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and Mahatma Gandhi acknowledged that the greatest resource of any nation is its youth. This is why for #SMW this year, our youths in maritime came together to support the organisation & running of various conferences and events held throughout the week. Being a part of the team gave them valuable opportunities to engage with key researchers, industry and govt representatives, keep abreast of the latest maritime developments, and gain insights on the challenges and opportunities lying ahead for maritime. Our MaritimeSG Youth Ambassadors (MYAs), MaritimeONE scholars as well as MPA interns took on a variety of roles and responsibilities to ensure a smooth and enjoyable #SMW2024 for all delegates and visitors from 77 countries. NTU student Vaisali Prabhakaran, as well as Maritime Youth Ambassadors Cheryl Hoon & Kesha Martiny emceed for events such as the Accelerating Digitalisation & Decarbonisation Conference and Maritime Services Leaders Forum, while fellow youth volunteers served as facilitators for the SMW discovery tours and vessel showcase at Singapore Maritime Gallery; and took on other logistical duties. Thought-provoking conversations on matters close to heart for youths in maritime were also held. The 2nd Youth@SMW Forum saw Jia Yong Goh present how digitalisation and decarbonisation have augmented the maritime skillsets in demand, as well as a panel discussion on “Career Opportunities for Youths in Maritime” moderated by Akanksha Batura Pai. The panel saw candid discussions between Kenneth Lim, Yujin Chia, Norhakim Sanwan (who was featured in The Matchmaker series), MYA Chan Lin Si, and MaritimeONE scholar Evangeline Koh, as they discussed how the government, industry and unions could help youth achieve their career goals amidst an evolving environment. First held in SMW 2023, Youth@SMW is a forum organised for youths by youths, bringing together industry leaders and youths across the maritime ecosystem to explore how our maritime talent pipelines can be strengthened to serve the needs of our future. MPA will continue working closely with academia, industry and union partners to create more opportunities for the next generation, and build a robust talent pipeline and workforce capable of supporting #MaritimeSG and the needs of the global maritime industry. Looking forward to the contributions of our maritime youths, and seeing them play a critical role in securing our future and facilitating the transition to a smarter, greener, more efficient future of shipping!
