🌱 Quo vadis, Europe? Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, DG AGRI European Commission, Yves Madre, FARM EUROPE, Herbert Dorfmann, EPP Group in the European Parliament and Morten Boje Hviid, Danish Agriculture and Food Council, have engaged in a panel debate to discuss the future of the agricultural policy in Europe. 🥗Over the past five years, policies like the Farm to Fork (F2F) strategy and debates on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) have centered around environmental sustainability, largely omitting food security as a key issue. However, recent crises, particularly related to energy dependence, have shifted the focus. Agricultural policy, which had lost prominence, is now back at the forefront of political debate, with food sovereignty and securing Europe’s nutritional needs becoming critical concerns. ⚖️The panel debate participants have emphasized the importance of balancing environmental sustainability with economic viability, noting that achieving these goals requires significant investment and innovation. Technologies like new genomic techniques (NGTs) were highlighted for their potential to improve both sustainability and profitability in farming. There was a consensus on the need to support active, sustainable farming in Europe to ensure long-term food security. 🗣️The discussion stressed the importance of dialogue, compromise, and political leadership to create policies that benefit both the environment and the agricultural sector. Moving forward, it will be crucial to ensure that agricultural innovation is supported and that farming remains an attractive and economically viable career. #sustainableagriculture #farming #euagriculture #sustainability #NGTs #newgenomictechniques #innovation #plantbreeding #EUGreenDeal #EUFarm2Fork

Hello everyone! Erin Wynands here from the ACER Team. Last week, I traveled to Ottawa to attend the Canadian Agri-Food in a Sustainable World Conference put on by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) and the Centre for Agri-Food Benchmarking. With 200 attendees and a diverse mix of panelists bringing unique perspectives, it was a stimulating two days thinking about all things agri-food sustainability policy. It was heartening to see so many organizations and individuals dedicated to the sector and improving sustainability. Canadian agriculture has come a long way in improving productivity and economic outcomes and we have a positive story to tell. Though, when it comes to delivering meaningful improved sustainability outcomes, we still face many challenges. There is work to do on bridging the gap between policy makers and those in the supply chain, being more discerning about the quality of environmental data and how it is being aggregated, and supporting farmers with practice and technology implementation. I left the conference with more questions than answers, which reinforces the idea that sustainability is not a box to be checked but rather a journey of continuous improvement. ACER is committed to advancing sustainability in livestock agriculture through research and knowledge translation and transfer and we welcome the opportunity to connect with others who share this interest. I would like to thank the conference organizers and attendees for a thought provoking experience! #Sustainability #Agriculture #AgriFood #Policy #Conference
