Thirty seven years ago, on September 16th 1987, government representatives from all over the world gathered in Montreal Canada to agree on an international treaty designed to restore the ozone layer—This treaty, the Montreal Protocol would go on to be hailed as one of the most successful examples of global environmental conservation efforts. What is the ozone layer? The ozone layer is a thin, yet crucial, layer in Earth’s stratosphere that acts as a protective barrier, absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. This shield works by filtering out 97-99% of the sun’s damaging UV-B and UV-C radiation, allowing only the necessary sunlight to reach Earth, keeping our ecosystems and human health in balance. Without it, life on Earth would be at risk of increased UV exposure, leading to serious health and environmental impacts. Human activities, particularly the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in refrigeration and aerosols, began depleting the ozone layer in the 20th century. Since the signing of the landmark Montreal treaty, the ozone layer is well on its way to recovery with the UN estimating that it is expected to return to pre-1980 levels by the middle of this century. On World Ozone Day, we celebrate the achievements of international cooperation in saving our planet’s silent shield. The ozone layer plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun. Why the Ozone Layer Matters: The ozone layer acts as Earth’s natural sunscreen, absorbing most of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Without it, human health, ecosystems, and wildlife would face severe risks, including increased skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to marine ecosystems. The Montreal Protocol: A Success Story The Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, is a landmark international agreement aimed at phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Thanks to global cooperation, the ozone layer is on a path to recovery, projected to heal by the middle of this century. What Can You Do? Limit the use of harmful chemicals: Avoid products containing ODS, such as certain refrigerants and aerosols. Support clean technologies: Advocate for sustainable practices in industries that promote environmental health. Raise awareness: Educate others about the importance of ozone protection and its link to combating climate change. The ozone layer, our planet’s natural shield, protects all life from harmful UV rays. Yet, human-made chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been depleting it, posing serious threats to health and the environment. The Montreal Protocol and its 2016 Kigali Amendment have been crucial in phasing out these ozone-depleting substances, leading to the healing of the ozone layer and preventing significant climate change. Thanks to global efforts, nearly 99% of harmful chemicals have been phased out, slowing climate change and potentially preventing millions of skin cancer cases. On September 16th, 1987, the #MontrealProtocol was officially finalized, a symbol of the global community’s commitment to addressing the depletion of the ozone layer. 🌎 The Montreal Protocol is an international agreement to phase out the production and use of substances that deplete the ozone layer like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)—man-made chemical compounds commonly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosol sprays, and foam-blowing applications.  Germany was an early and strong advocate for international action on ozone depletion. German scientists provided key research on ozone depletion, raising global awareness about the environmental dangers of CFCs and working to develop alternatives to CFCs and other harmful chemicals. The Montreal Protocol is a true success story of multilateralism in international environmental protection. To this day, it is one of the most successful environmental agreements—and one of the first United Nations agreements to be ratified by all member states. The ozone layer, which the protocol aimed to protect, has been slowly but steadily recovering since the late 1990s. In the face of the triple planetary crisis—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—the Montreal Protocol is a reminder that the international community can come together to make a lasting, positive impact on the environment.

Community/ grassroots air quality monitoring campaigns can generate the needed data for clean air solutions in environments previously not monitored with community members leading the way. The approach maybe useful for air quality management in environmental justice communities by giving power back to the people through robust, and collaborative air quality research. Sugrue et al made a compelling case on the need for adding black carbon (BC) to community monitoring of particulate matter. Worth reading... "Together, these spatiotemporal trends show that BC is a better indicator of the proximity and activity of local pollution sources than PM2.5. Thus, including BC in addition to PM2.5 in community monitoring networks can provide additional insights about local sources of air pollution."
