One method of reducing NOx emissions is to fix the issue after the NOx has left the cylinders using a system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in the exhaust. This was developed by the Engelhard Corporation (now BASF) in 1957. It consists of a catalyst using vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum or more recently iron zeolite or copper zeolite. What is also required is whats known as a reductant, which is usually Ammonia (NH3), to be added to the chemical reaction. The result is that the NOx and Ammonia are turned into harmless Nitrogen and water vapour. The minimum temperature that this reaction is most effective at depends on the catalyst material used, but is usually above 250°C. To handle Ammonia in a safe way, SCR equipped machines have a tank fitted to them containing a fluid that is a mixture of water and Urea that gets injected into the hot exhaust gases. The heat then turns the Urea into Ammonia inside the exhaust system. Our 7L51/60 four-stroke test #engine has successfully conducted its first combustion with #methanol at the test bench in Augsburg, Germany. The test engine is the central part of a research and development program to design a retrofit package for the conversion of conventional MAN four-stroke engines already in the field to #dualfuel methanol operation. Our customers will initially be able to convert existing MAN 48/60 engines to the latest 51/60R-DF-M engine type with methanol capability. MAN PrimeServ plans to convert the first four-stroke engines for a pilot customer in autumn 2025, at which stage the package will be made available to the general market. Retrofitting existing four-stroke engines to methanol operation has a substantial emission saving potential already in the next years. With the new retrofit option we will be able to upgrade fossil-fuel powered #ships to climate-neutral methanol operation and contribute to reaching IMO #climategoals.
