Imagine a world where Sex Education empowers youth. A world where curiosity about our bodies and how we grow up isn't met with hushed tones and awkward silences. A world where understanding intimacy and relationships is seen as empowering, not taboo. This world exists with comprehensive sex education! Think about it, butterflies aren't the only things that take flight during puberty.  It's a time of incredible transformation, and shouldn't our education reflect that? Sex ed isn't about stripping away innocence; it's about giving young minds the tools to navigate this exciting, sometimes confusing, chapter with confidence.  Young people are bombarded with messages about sex, often from unreliable sources. Let's equip them with accurate information, open communication, and the power to make healthy choices. What does it take to build a world where we see sex as a pleasurable activity and not one ridden with ignominy? Would it require us to re-think how we introduce ourselves, our children and our society at large to the idea of sex? In today’s post we share responses from people who first heard/understood about sex through cuss words, gaalis, and how it shaped their ideas of sex. The words, often casually used—be it office spaces, or in stand-up shows—carry sentiments of a range of sex-negative attitudes from homophobia to slut shaming. And yet, studies upon studies have shown that a course in sex education is directly linked to reduced bullying, suicide rates, reduced homophobia and increased allyship. Research conducted by the University of Miami Comprehensive sexual education is needed to help teenagers understand what strategies to adopt in case of peer pressure. HOW TO GET YOUR CHILD TO OPEN TO YOU ON SEXUAL MATTERS 1. Create a Safe Space: Let your child know they can talk to you about anything without fear of judgment or punishment. 2. Listen Without Interrupting: Allow them to express their thoughts and concerns before jumping in with advice. This will make them feel heard and valued. 3. Normalize the Conversation: Make sex education a normal part of life. Use everyday moments, like watching TV together, to bring up topics related to relationships, consent, and body changes. 4. Be Honest and Clear: Answer their questions in an age-appropriate and straightforward way. If you’re unsure about something, it’s okay to say, “I’ll find out more for you.” 5. Encourage Questions: Make it clear that no question is too embarrassing or wrong. The goal is to help them learn and make informed decisions. Sex education should never be shameful. Telling young people that their feelings and bodies are bad or broken is plain wrong. Comprehensive sex education goes beyond just anatomy—it's about equipping individuals with the tools to understand consent, respect boundaries, and make informed choices. It’s about breaking the cycle of shame and stigma that surrounds natural human experiences, and fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding. A recent report from Culture Reframed reveals that 1 in 3 children have been exposed to explicit, hardcore pornography by age 12, which equates to roughly 25 million children in the U.S. alone. This exposure is alarming in many ways, one being that it often serves as a form of sex education for these young minds. Even more concerning is that over 87% of pornographic content portrays sexual violence against women. While this is a serious issue, there’s a solution. By providing comprehensive, ongoing sex education, we can empower children to make informed, healthy decisions based on real-life relationships, not the damaging depictions they see on a screen. Sex Education does not sexualise children, it teaches them about the rights from wrongs, so they can make informed decisions when they begin that stage of their life. It’s better than them learning from hearsay and leaving us to pick up the pieces when something goes wrong, because nobody knew the rules.
