Earlier today (Thursday, 19 December) the government announced a £100 million boost for adult and children’s hospices and £26 million to support children and young people’s hospices. As an organisation, we welcome this announcement. It is a step in the right direction and an acknowledgement of the critical role hospices like St Nicholas Hospice Care play in providing high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care. However, while this is an investment in hospices, it remains a one-off contribution, and the need for sustainable funding for hospices persists. Following the announcement, we were approached by BBC Look East who wanted to interview our CEO Linda McEnhill for our reaction to the news. BBC Look East visited our Hospice in Bury St Edmunds this afternoon and we expect something will be included in tonight’s BBC Look East programme at 6.30pm

St Andrew's Hospice welcomes the news that the Government has pledged £100m of additional support to the hospice sector. The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced the capital funding will be delivered over two years, with an additional £26m towards continuing a grant for children and young people. St Andrew's Hospice Chief Executive Michelle Rollinson said: "This week's announcement was welcomed by our staff, volunteers, patients and families, as well as the wider community we serve. "It costs more than £6.5million each year to provide our services, of which just 18% is funded by the NHS, so we are pleased that the Government has recognised the financial strain that the sector has been under. "We look forward to finding out more about the terms of the funding in the new year." https://ow.ly/6JVf50UuRhh.

✨ Biggest Investment into Hospices in a Generation ✨ We welcome the UK Government’s announcement of a £100 million investment into hospices across the country – the largest commitment of its kind in decades. This crucial funding will help address the increasing demand for hospice care, ensuring that more families and individuals receive the compassionate support they need. At Richard House Children's Hospice, this announcement comes as a beacon of hope for the children’s hospice sector. As our CEO Paul Richards aptly said: “This is a well-timed announcement for Richard House and the Children’s Hospice Sector, and we look forward to hearing the details of how these much-needed funds will be allotted in the coming weeks.” Every day, hospices like ours work tirelessly to make a difference for children and their families. With this new investment, we are optimistic about what the future holds for improving access to care and sustainability across the sector. We’ll be closely following the developments on this funding and advocating for the children’s hospice community. Together, we can continue to make life better for the families who rely on us. 💗 #HospiceCare #ChildrensHospices #GovernmentFunding #CompassionInCare

We have asked our MPs to attend the debate on hospice funding tomorrow, 22 April 2024. Why? ➡️ Hospices provide vital person and family centred palliative and end of life care, yet our NHS funding covers barely 30% of our costs; ➡️The cost of service provision is rising. To meet the increasingly complex and multiple care needs of individuals in our care, we need to attract and retain skilled clinical staff. We need to be able to offer them decent pay rises so they can live a good life and afford to feed their families; ➡️ We pride ourselves on enabling people in our care to live life to the full, till the end. Why is dying well such a low unspoken priority in our society? The profile of our sector needs to rise. Please do take part in the debate 🙏🙌
📣 The debate on hospice funding has been rescheduled for Monday 22nd April. This week we've shared that hospices are facing a collective deficit of £77m. We need a new model for funding end of life care, so hospices can continue to support people now and long into the future. We need to see as many MPs as possible at the debate to talk about this important topic. Please write to your MP and ask them attend. https://lnkd.in/eZVRaGB7

The current climate has resulted in many UK hospices being forced to cut services, leading to fewer inpatient beds and community services being reduced. We need help and support available from local MPs across Lincolnshire and the new UK government. With hundreds of new MPs and a new government in place, it’s critical for St Barnabas Hospice and other UK hospices that the challenge is understood and positive change is supported. Please write to your MP now, using this simple 1 minute form to support your local community and show them how much hospice care matters. At St Barnabas, we have launched our Organisational Strategy for 2024 to 2029. This determines the direction of travel for our Hospice over the next five years, with strategic priorities that will help us sustain the level of care, support, and services that we provide to over 12,000 patients and their families across Lincolnshire, every year. How many more hospices are going to have to make cuts to services, before the government acts? Anyone going to take a guess? It was so sad to hear yesterday that St Catherine's Hospice Sussex and Surrey becomes the sixth hospice in the last couple of months to make cuts to services. St Catherine’s was my local hospice growing up in Crawley, and it is much loved for its outstanding specialised and personalised care. As an eight year old boy, I even remember fundraising for it, raising the grand total of £6.10! Because it's not as if hospices and their local community don’t do their bit - Hospices rely on fundraising, as on average, only a 1/3 of their income comes from government. Which other intrinsic part of the health system is funded like this, with so little public funding? And government is failing to even keep up with this - increases to hospice funding are trifling. While government agrees to a NHS pay increase 5.5% this year (which sets the market for nurses' salaries), it is not doing the same for hospice funding. On top of that, any hope of additional funding, because hospices are caring for more patients, because of our ageing population, appears to be a pipe dream. The amount of public funding for hospices and the system of how it’s calculated is broken. It needs fixing urgently. And the frustrating thing is, it’s so short-sighted. These cuts will result in more NHS costs, as more people have to go to hospital (with less end of life care specialism). This is when end of life care in the UK has been ranked as the best in the world, largely due to its hospice sector - something we've got right in the health sector. Dame Cicely Saunders set up the world’s first modern hospice at St Christopher's in 1967. She was frustrated by a health system that focussed only on the “curable” rather than the dying. It appears we are in danger of making the same mistake now. What does this say about our society if we don’t look after the dying and those close to them?
More bad news this morning, as St Catherine's Hospice Sussex and Surrey becomes the sixth UK hospice to announce major cuts in funding and care service job losses over recent weeks. Low local NHS funding means that the hospice has not been able to grow its income in line with its rising cost case. Everyone at Hospice UK sends their solidarity to those affected https://lnkd.in/eWF5u-QA
