I completely agree with your point, Dr. Justin Thomas. It's no longer enough to deliver information; we have to engage and connect with our audiences to achieve impactful results. In today's world, where information is readily available, effective academic presentations require a mix of expertise, storytelling, and interaction. This shift is necessary to keep academic conferences relevant and dynamic rather than becoming outdated. Without adapting these skills, conferences risk becoming quaint curiosities, much like handwritten letters, rotary phones, and cassette tapes.
On the Conference It was easy to be the sage on stage when access to information was hard. Today, beyond knowing our stuff we also need to be able to connect and engage with audiences. The information age and attention economy call for a new blend of skills when it comes to giving effective academic presentations. Without the cultivation of these skills, the academic conference is scheduled to go the way of the handwritten letter and the vinyl record – cute curiosities on the fringes of the information age.
