Springtime is subscription renewal time. In Pittsburgh, they are experimenting with different sorts of subscription models to make up some of the lost revenue. Flexibility is the new name of the game. At Pittsburgh Opera, subscriptions were down another 6% in the fall of 2023 compared to the fall of 2022. Next season, the opera will mount five productions over the course of the season, one fewer than previous seasons due to inflation and costs outpacing revenue growth. New this season is the “Opus Pass.” For $20 a month, pass holders can attend the opera any night they choose and as often as they like. Instead of a guaranteed seat, the pass guarantees best available seating that isn’t in the premium “A” tier. “As far as we know, we’re the first kind of opera company to offer this kind of pass,” said Chris Cox, the opera’s director of marketing and communications. Theaters and museums have used membership models in the past, but it’s a new option at the opera, and opera companies around the country are watching to see how it does in Pittsburgh. Friday Arts … the world is still not improving, so let’s keep talking about other things that are more fun! Springboard Opera had its first night out last weekend. And what a night it was. The first ever Springboard Opera Gala in fabulous Brisbane. And in the spirit of doing it differently, it was opera, but not opera. Some, but not all, of the Springboard Opera young (and talented) human beans were introduced to Brisbane in a fabulous star-studded night of music, theatre and general cool-ness. If you missed out, you’ll have to wait for the next Springboard Thing. And because no man is an island – thanks for the words, John Donne – we are not so much creating an arts organisation as a 21st century Arts Ecosystem that thrives on innovation. Ecosystems imply lots of interconnectedness. Between all the parts. Side-to-Side and Front-to-Back. So the innovation needs to flow Side-to-Side and Front-to-Back. And to make this work, all those parts matter equally. One of the things that was said at the Gala was “Singing optional”. That is because we need skills and INNOVATION everywhere. And with that – a bit of fractured Dr Suess, this time – Oh, the places We’ll go! If you are up for a bit of Amazeballs stuff… Come down and see us at https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg – it is going to be WILD! Opera Philadelphia’s recent decision to introduce a pay-what-you-can model, with tickets starting as low as $11, has generated considerable buzz over the past week. 🎟️ Spearheaded by countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, this new initiative has been praised for its potential to attract new audiences by making opera more accessible. Indeed, within 48 hours of launching this new model, Opera Philadelphia sold nearly 6,000 tickets—4,539 of them at the $11 level, and two-thirds of them new-to-file ticket buyers. Plus, 440 patrons added a voluntary donation to their purchase. What does the customer-centric lens have to say about Opera Philadelphia's new $11 ticket model? 🔍 I'll be exploring this question later today in my newsletter. Because in our digital, pluralistic, world where the customer holds ultimate control, the customer-centric lens is a must for every strategy conversation. P.S. Not already subscribed? This is so important for #artsandculture #artsandentertainment venues to understand. #vat #taxation #financeandaccounting #accountingsoftware
If you went to your local arts venue to see a screening of Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag, Bill Nighy in Skylight or the Royal Opera House’s Das Rheingold, what did you actually see? A live show or a film? Labelling the experience as one thing or the other might seem like splitting hairs – unless you’re responsible for the venue’s finances. A recent tribunal had to rule on whether such showings were live cultural events that should be exempt from VAT. Its decision could be significant for the many arts organisations that have been watching with interest. VAT expert Hilary Bevan offered her insights for our report on an issue that, like a West End hit, could run and run. https://lnkd.in/dW8kaQQu

I recently had the privilege of attending the “The Color of Surveillance: Surveillance & Resistance” conference, hosted by the Georgetown Law Center on Privacy and Technology. Thank you to Georgetown University and the organizers for curating such a powerful and thought-provoking event. Conferences like these spotlight critical issues and connect people and communities dedicated to justice. One of the most memorable moments for me was the interactive poetry session led by Sunu Chandi and Michael Colonese. Reflecting on experiences with strangers and turning those into poetry was deeply moving. It was a reminder of how art transcends barriers and creates “heart spaces” where solidarity thrives. In an era increasingly defined by surveillance and control, humanizing resistance through art feels more important than ever. The grassroots resistance stories shared at the conference were equally powerful. I was particularly struck by: • David, a refugee who shared his journey of resilience in the face of systemic surveillance. • Rami, who exposed the intersection of militarization and digital surveillance in Palestine. Their experiences underscored the critical role of community mobilization and grassroots action in fighting oppressive systems. What resonated most was the global scale of these challenges—whether it’s AI in border control, state-sponsored hacking in the Gulf, or the commercialization of surveillance technology. These stories remind us that collaborative resistance and international solidarity are essential. By amplifying voices, sharing resources, and building connections across borders, we can counter these pervasive systems of control. This event inspired me to reflect on how we, as individuals and professionals, can contribute to the collective fight against surveillance. Whether through advocacy, art, or grassroots organizing, every effort counts. For those who couldn’t attend, I encourage you to explore the work of the Georgetown Law Center on Privacy and Technology and connect with organizations and individuals in this space. We can build networks that resist oppression and champion equity and justice. If you also attended the event, I’d love to hear your reflections. And if you’re working in privacy, technology, or human rights, let’s connect—I’m eager to learn from your experiences and continue this important conversation. #SurveillanceResistance #GrassrootsAction #PrivacyRights #GeorgetownLaw #HumanRightsNetworking

Friday Arts. #Springboardopera …reinvents opera experiences for all, in unexpected, inspiring ways whilst providing a platform through which emerging artists can advance their craft. Believing in the transformative value of music, we aim to unite performers and audiences alike in productions that benefit all involved. And how is that relevant in a business forum like LinkedIn? Weel, mainly because, when it is filtered down, Springboard is about innovation and changing the paradigm that is an arts business. If we are going to deliver on our mission, a new type of arts organisation is going to be needed. All the things that relate to a C21 business model apply, but especially things like engaging with stakeholders, transformational thinking, integrated end-to-end solutions, leadership and social licence. To support emerging artists, is there a better way than relying on Government for ongoing funding? Or is there a different way to think about sustainable funding? To bring opera to a wider range of audiences, we need to engage in different ways. Opera in unexpected, inspiring ways… in ways that connect to contemporary audiences in a VUCA world. Opera and the arts generally live an operate in the same VUCA world as, well, the rest of the world. So why should it be any different building a resilient and sustainable organisation in the arts space as opposed to in another business space? This is the other side of “reinventing opera experiences”. We cannot reinvent the opera experience without reinventing the arts organisation behind it. This is Springboard Opera … if you connect with these ideas, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gS53GYEN, and become a friend or get involved. #Future #TransformationalLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment #Directors #Technology #Performingarts #YourNetworkForLife Luisa Tarnawski Leslie Martin Gheorja Haidley
