Future of the European Biotechnology Sector: Global "Leader" or a late "Follower"?🤔 Honored to have participated in the concluding panel of the EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries Biomanufacturing Policy Summit 2024, discussing the crucial topic of "How does Policy deliver for Biomanufacturing - Looking Ahead." 🌍 Reflecting on the insightful discussions, it's evident that Europe stands at a pivotal moment in the biotechnology landscape. 🚀 With the global stage evolving between innovation powerhouses, Europe must define its role: Leader or Follower? 💡 Key takeaways shed light on the urgency to prioritize biotechnology innovation in Europe, aligning with the concept of 'Strategic Autonomy.' 🛠️ However, challenges persist, from R&D financing disparities to slower registration procedures compared to the US. 📊 Yet, hope resonates with initiatives like the recently released Communication on "Building the Future with Nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU" offering a strategic framework to enhance biotechnology within the EU. 🌿 Excited to see the momentum and action plans unfold to realize this ambitious vision! 📈 Now is the time for strategic and bold decisions in the life sciences sector. Europe stands at a crossroad, and the time for decisive action is now. Let's shape the future of biotechnology together! 💪 Claire Skentelbery | Ana Maria Bravo-Angel | Sinead Keogh | Christophe Lanneau #Biomanufacturing #Policy #Biotechnology #InnovationInHealthcare #EUCompetitiveness

One of the leading #biotechnology hubs in Europe just released its yearly investment report: the CataloniaBio & HealthTech's 2023 Study on Investment in Catalonia. ♻ Sector recovery: the figures for Catalonia show that the growth experienced in 2019-2020 is here to stay, as the 2023 results are almost identical to 2020 and 2021 (between 220 and 230 million per year). But no growth. 📈 Crowdequity does grow: participative finance is still on the rise, with a moderate 4,6% rise. In 2023 it represented 13% of all Catalan investment. As far as we know, that crowdequity is 100% us, but we can stand corrected - let us know if you know of any other! More info -> https://lnkd.in/dRDHTJwV

The next panel in the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Catalyst launch is Chaired by Phil Carvil (who is Chair of IBIC Advisory Board). On the panel are Richard Jones of The University of Manchester, Natalie Jones of EPSRC , Geoff Davison of Bionow, and Andy Roberts of Alderley Park. They discussed further opportunities and challenges that IBIC will take on. They start off by discussing the roles of skills development in fostering the innovation ecosystem. They emphasise the need for skills across the range of different levels and roles required by the industries. They then talked about the roles of Investment Zones in regional growth. Again, the conversation returned to collaboration across regions and industries. Clearly, business doesn't recognise boundaries, but they do recognise supportive environments that meet their business needs. They also understand the benefits of clustering to build strength through a critical mass of activities. All of the panellists agree that investment in regional strengths and coordination of clustering is important if we want to deliver on UK ambitions for growth and environmental sustainability.
