VIDEO: AGRICULTURE apprenticeships and T Levels - Claire W. of Hartpury University and Hartpury College Claire Whitworth is deputy principal of Hartpury College. Hartpury College has 2,000 students and Hartpury University has 2,500 students. Of those, 500 are studying agriculture, whether as apprenticeships or extended diplomas. Hartpury College will be introducing specialist T Levels in agriculture - in either livestock, crops or agricultural engineering - in September 2024. The college is going to include a sandwich year in the livestock T Level, following 100% success in getting students into the industry through its livestock extended diploma. Whether studying for apprenticeships or T Levels, agriculture students at Hartpury have unique access to industry, including Hartpury's own commercial farm. Claire said: "The commercial bit is really important to us at Hartpury, because it means students are learning in that real world environment. It's not simulated, it is a proper commercial environment. Students are milking at 4am and that's exactly what they would do in industry. "Hartpury is a fantastic place to learn, we've got fantastic staff with amazing skillsets. We've invested £50m in our resources over the last 10 years and we continue to invest. With our specialist staff, all that great equipment and the latest technology, it means that students really will stand out from the crowd. "That's ultimately what we want to achieve, ensuring our students really are work-ready, not just for the jobs of today, but for the jobs of the future." Skills Insight engaged with stakeholders across Australia to investigate how an agricultural trade apprenticeship could be implemented to help attract new entrants and promote career pathways in agriculture. Research focused on the dynamics of a trade apprenticeship in agriculture. The research insights have been summarised in the "Ag Trade Apprenticeship Feasibility Report". The research suggests that an Ag Trade Apprenticeship would have the greatest chance of helping to alleviate the skills and labour shortages being experienced in agriculture, build the future workforce, provide people with access to secure, fairly paid jobs, and remove barriers to employment with a multi-pronged approach including: ◼ training product development ◼ training and assessment resource development ◼ careers promotion activities to attract young people and other cohorts ◼ promotion of the trade-style occupation brand ◼ employer support resources ◼ incentives from the Australian Government. Well worth a read through, all the information you need to help guide you through the process of taking on an apprentice.
Back in February, we launched our free employer #toolkit to encourage small farm businesses to take on apprentices, helping to bring new entrants into an industry that is challenged by labour shortages. 🛠 Did you know that although farmers see the benefits of employing apprentices, they often struggle to find practical information about this employment and training route? That's where our toolkit comes in! 🦸 ‘’Lantra’s simple ‘how-to’ guide, provides practical guidance on what an apprenticeship is, what is involved and breaks down the steps to take. - John Aynsley, Farm Business Owner Download the toolkit today - https://lnkd.in/ewJWTA-m Not a #farm business owner?
