A key takeaway from day one of the Growth Summit is that you can't think of 'growth policy' or 'industrial policy' or 'investment climate reform' in the abstract, and expect that market level reforms on their own will lead to growth. Large, formal firms are key to economic growth, and many low income countries have too few of them. So policy needs to get concrete about how to support the growth of existing large firms, and how to support the creation and market entry of more large firms. All while ensuring that the few large firms do not capture policy and protect their existing positions, so that growth can be sustained through market entry and exit.

I’d like to share (one of) the most mind-opening subjects I chose to study during my exchange at UNIL, which is the multidisciplinary class of social innovation and entrepreneurship. Yesterday I got the opportunity to assist to the inspiring forum of social innovation. It is a growing sector aiming to change classical (unsustainable) financial growth models and include social and environmental growth. I am not an expert in finance but luckily the essence of social innovation is to, together, regardless of the discipline, build solutions that benefit companies, governments, and communities, and act for the UNs sustainable development goals! Listening to the stories of some Ashoka fellows and their significant impact gave me hope and motivation to contribute to a more equal future built on trust and diversity! 💪🌱 #socialinnovation #SDGs

The Power of Young Minds: Leading the Change for Tomorrow We, the youth, are the power of tomorrow. The potential we hold is undeniable, and the world is starting to take notice. As young leaders, we don’t just represent the future; we are actively shaping it. In every corner of the world, from tech hubs to research labs, we are challenging traditional ways and pioneering new innovations. A shining example of this is Strettch, a start-up that recently won a $100,000 contract to develop a groundbreaking research and innovation portfolio for Rwanda Polytechnic. This achievement is not just a victory for the company but a massive step forward in showing the world that young minds can tackle even the most complex challenges. Strettch, led by dynamic young innovators like Clarance Liberiste Ntwari, SAUVÉ Jean-Luc, Blessing Hirwa, and other young leaders. This is a reminder that we are not just dreamers; we are doers. This achievement is a testament to the power of youth to transform ideas into tangible progress. It's an inspiration for every young person out there, proving that when given the opportunity, we can bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, bringing fresh perspectives to industries in need of transformation. To my fellow young leader at Strettch, congratulations! 🎊 Your success is a beacon of hope and an example of what is possible when young people are trusted with responsibility. You are not just making waves in Rwanda; you are sending a global message that young minds are ready to take on the world and lead the charge toward a better future. Let’s continue to push boundaries, challenge expectations, and, most importantly, believe in our own power to change the world. We are not just the future; we are the present, and we are here to make history.

Complexity, systems and portfolios for innovation and learning https://lnkd.in/eNtnTtxw I was recently asked to provide some examples of organizations that are taking a portfolio approach to engaging with complex and systemic social challenges, in the global development space. I'm particularly interested in approaches that see the elements in the portfolio as opportunities to explore, experiment and learn about the parts of interlinked systems, in interconnected ways, rather than portfolios that are just aggregated collections of projects. As a first step to providing some examples, I've pulled together the things I've read/watched over the last few years that are about this sort of approach to portfolios. It includes links to and summaries of some great pieces from colleagues including Giulio Quaggiotto, Andrea Bina, Søren Vester Haldrup, Sam Rye, Diastika Rahwidiati, Milica Begovic, PhD, Mariela Atanassova, Annemarie Poorterman and Tina M Saeteraas Stoum. Sharing in case useful for other folks exploring the value, and challenges, of portfolio approaches. If you're interested in seeing more - my notes and highlights on some of the articles for instance - give me a shout. In terms of organisations and initiatives that are at the leading edge of such approaches UNDP (both the Strategic Innovation Unit and the Accelerator Labs), CHÔRA Foundation, Climate-KIC, Systems Innovation, Centre for Public Impact, the TransCap Initiative, Sida's Systems Innovation and Learning Partnership, and a number of UK Government FCDO offices are on my radar. That clearly reflects where I'm sat, professionally and geographically (in the UK, at the seaside). If you have suggestions of other organisations with interesting experience, or other useful pieces that I have missed, I'd be glad to hear of them, and will be happy to update and re-share my summary of resources. #complexity #systemsthinking #portfolios
