Assam is in the midst of an education crisis, with dropout rates in primary schools soaring to 6.02% and 8.82%, nearly 4x the national average. Over 100,000 children remain out of school, many of them from marginalized communities impacted by poverty, teacher shortages, and recurring disasters. Amid these challenges, Snehjori, led by Ms. Reshma Begum, is igniting hope in Jalukbari. Their transformative programs—library outreach, early childhood education, and disaster relief efforts are equipping children of migratory workers with the tools to not just learn but lead their communities toward progress. #EducationForAll #Empowerment #SocialImpact #LeadershipThroughEducation #Assam #JaiHindProject Vineet K. #Story In the heart of #Bhiwadi, #Rajasthan lies the #slum of Manshachawk—a bustling settlement of around 500 homes and 2,500 people. The residents, #migrants from #Bangladesh, #Assam, and other Indian states, are engaged in garbage collection, rag-picking, and various forms of unorganized labor. Life in Manshachawk is a daily struggle, marked by poverty, illiteracy, and the absence of basic needs. Substance abuse is rampant, and the lack of valid documents like Aadhar cards excludes them from government welfare schemes. The children, often left alone when their parents leave for work, are vulnerable to abuse and trafficking, with some children never returning home. Here is a story of struggle, resilience, and success. Read how the CTH study centre supported by LIC Housing Finance Limited with its impact Partner ARCH Foundation, is changing the lives of the people of Manshachawk. https://lnkd.in/d8eQ5jgC

Madhya Pradesh to Ban Begging from 1st January 2025 – is it a Band-Aid Solution or a Step Forward? From next year, begging will be officially banned in MP, and those giving alms could face FIRs. The intention? Cleaner public spaces, tackling exploitation, and addressing poverty. But sochne wali baat hai - Poverty doesn’t vanish when you ban begging. Let’s look at the ground reality: - 32.6% of MP’s population lives below the poverty line (well above the national average of 21.9%). - India has over 4 lakh beggars, with MP among the top states. - Child begging is heartbreaking- over 60% of child beggars are victims of organized rackets. We have seen similar bans in #Delhi and #Telangana. The results? Mixed. Why? Bans #without #strong #rehabilitation are like locking doors without fixing the leaks. The real challenge: 🚀 Creating skill-based jobs to provide alternatives. 🏠 Building functional shelters and rehabilitation programs. 👊 Cracking down on the begging mafias exploiting the vulnerable. 📚 Ensuring education and social security for the next generation. #Banning #begging may improve #aesthetics, but poverty isn’t about appearances. It’s about opportunities. A question we must ask: Will pushing beggars off the streets solve the problem, or do we need to dig deeper and #fix #the #system? #PovertySolutions #MadhyaPradesh #SocialChange #PolicyMatters #RehabilitationNotBans #IndiaForChange #OpportunityForAll #RealSolutions

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has helped over 3.45 crore families access housing, but is it reaching the most deserving? In my latest article for ORF, I explore the beneficiary identification processes under PMAY and highlight the challenges in ensuring equitable access to affordable housing, especially for India's most marginalised groups. 🔗https://lnkd.in/dkDd6EUR #AffordableHousing #PMAY #HousingForAll

It seems funny to me how the government of India would be keen on coming up with schemes like the midday meal program. This scheme is apparently supposed to provide an incentive for a child from a poor household to attend school. However, it may not provide enough incentive for teachers to teach and may encourage the few available teachers to focus more on monitoring the meals being served rather than teaching. Enrollment numbers may look good for a few years, but the learning levels for children in India are alarmingly low. #poverty #education #school

🚨 Big Move by Madhya Pradesh Government: Begging to be Banned from January 2025 🚨 Starting January 1, 2025, the Madhya Pradesh government will officially ban begging across the state. In a significant step, anyone found giving money to beggars could even face an FIR. The government’s aim is clear: to tackle poverty, clean up public spaces, and reduce the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. However, this bold move raises some important questions. 🤔 📊 Key Facts: ➡️ Population of MP: 70.7 million (2021 Census) ➡️ Poverty Rate: 32.6%, far above the national average of 21.9%. ➡️ India’s Beggars: Approximately 4 lakh beggars, with MP being one of the states with the largest populations forced into begging. ➡️ Child Beggary: 60% of child beggars are victims of organized rackets, highlighting deeper systemic issues. 🔍 Learning from Other States: Similar bans in Delhi and Telangana have had mixed results. Why? ➡️ Poor implementation ➡️ Lack of proper rehabilitation programs 💡 The Bigger Question: Will this ban effectively address poverty, or is it just a temporary solution? While the move could clean up public spaces and reduce exploitation, real success hinges on: ✅ Strong rehabilitation programs for affected individuals ✅ Education & employment opportunities for those in need ✅ Cracking down on organized begging rackets Is banning begging the right approach to combat poverty, or should we focus on systemic reforms that tackle the root causes? 🤝 What are your thoughts on this bold initiative? Let’s discuss! 👇 #MadhyaPradesh #BeggingBan #SocialReform #PovertyReduction #PublicPolicy #Rehabilitation

Conducting a survey about beggars at a ghat was an eye-opening experience. The ghat I visited was bustling with activity, with people coming to bathe, perform religious rituals, and simply enjoy the serene atmosphere by the river. Approaching the beggars, I was struck by the diversity of their backgrounds and stories. Some were elderly, their weathered faces telling tales of a lifetime of struggle. Others were children, their innocence juxtaposed against the harsh reality of their circumstances. Each had a unique story to tell. As I began to interview them, I learned about the challenges they faced on a daily basis. Many spoke of discrimination and stigma, recounting instances where they were treated as less than human simply because of their economic status. Others shared stories of loss and hardship that had led them to beg on the streets. Despite their hardships, there was a resilience and dignity to many of the beggars I spoke with. They spoke of dreams and aspirations, however distant they may seem. Some expressed a desire for education for their children, while others simply longed for a roof over their heads. Through the survey, I gained a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding poverty and homelessness in the area. It became clear that addressing these issues would require a multifaceted approach, one that addresses not only the immediate needs of the beggars but also the systemic issues that perpetuate their cycle of poverty. Overall, conducting the survey at the ghat was a humbling experience that left me with a renewed sense of compassion and a greater appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. It reinforced the importance of empathy and understanding in addressing the challenges faced by the most vulnerable members of society.
