The aftermath of the 2007 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2022 inflation continues to burden European citizens. Urbanization and housing shortages have made urban living spaces unaffordable, blurring the line between genuine housing and makeshift accommodations. The Liquid Housing Lab explores "liquid housing" to provide evidence, raise awareness, and find solutions, aiming to uphold the rights and dignity of those affected. The lab is implemented in Tarragona (Spain) and aims to enrich co-creation and participatory proceses for reframing housing policies while empowering citizens. New Article in Environment & Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science 🚨 "Creating inequality in access to public transit? Densification, gentrification, and displacement" by our colleagues Elena Lutz, Michael Wicki and David Kaufmann. The article investigates the effects of densification around train stations in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on transit-oriented development (TOD) and its impact on socio-economic population composition and potential displacement effects, showing that it increases inequality in access to public transit 🚊🏠 https://lnkd.in/efu_iuax

Include non-human entities, alongside humans, in urban regeneration projects aimed at vulnerable groups at risk of exclusion. #GreenInCities goes far beyond Nature-Based Solutions. The project will develop a wide range of participatory tools and methods for humans and non-humans to analyse their needs. These tools will be used to design solutions that can enhance their health and well-being in the urban landscape In addition, a special focus will be on vulnerable groups to bring a more humanistic perspective to the project.

The Scottish Government is the only European country that has elevated the facilitation of #20minuteneighbourhoods to national policy. Because the government understands that with a complete and accessible #dailyurbansystem, there is less inequality and poverty, better physical and mental health for residents, a stronger economy, and less environmental impact. Whether we’re talking about a #10minutecity, a #15minutecity, or a #30minuteregion, it’s all about envisioning a sustainable, healthy, and livable country, region, city, or neighborhood. Proximity, accessibility, and inclusivity are key concepts in this vision. It requires the government and urban professionals to move away from complex-oriented thinking and working toward a more integrated approach (in terms of geography and socio-economic aspects). In this context, the Scottish government has published several highly interesting studies and guidelines (for local authorities). The latest addition is the ‘Scottish Government Planning Guidance: Local living and 20-minute neighborhoods’ (available here: https://lnkd.in/eVTYJ7CE). It is very readable, beautifully illustrated, and, most importantly, provides numerous references. It clearly describes the what and how of the 20-minute neighborhood and, even more importantly, outlines how to achieve it. This includes examining multiple case studies. Scotland is, of course, a very diverse country, with large cities and sparsely populated regions and islands. It’s fascinating to see how they’ve developed different approaches for various components. For every urban and design professional, this is definitely worth exploring!
