🚨 Why is mental health R&D so slow? 🚨 Celebrate #WorldMentalHealthDay by understanding how we can drive change together? A recent review by Wellcome Trust and Technopolis Group (https://bit.ly/3YjAUk3) highlights key barriers in the mental health R&D landscape, from scientific knowledge gaps to clinical trial recruitment and retention challenges. Regulatory uncertainty, complex pricing, digital product confusion, and low treatment-seeking due to stigma also contribute to the delays. The report calls the R&D pathway a ‘leaky pipeline,’ with vital roles for funders and investors to help plug the gaps through innovative funding, collaborations, and advocacy. #MentalHealthDay #MentalHealthResearch #Innovation #FundingMentalHealth #R&D #Collaboration #MentalHealth

Thank you Jamestown for helping us with the retail strategy for this event series! Here is my pitch for why you might care about the opportunity to pay 10 cents from your HSA/FSA for every hour you spend in a public sauna in the waterways of New York City in the upcoming years: Please join us to learn how we are putting saunas in the Hudson River in the upcoming years to reduce the tax-free burden or opportunity cost the City of New York pays for health care and social wellness. There are several commercial entities like Othership ($50/90mins, HSA/FSA eligible via Truemed), akarisauna.com (monthly expensive membership), AIRE Ancient Baths (even more expensive), Russian & Turkish Baths ($50/day), elahni ($50/2h), WORLD SPA ($90+), King Spa, Recoverie (strict time limits), HigherDOSE (infrared only), SoJo Spa Club ($90/day), and on and on... However, when I went to Estonia last week, I made sure to visit the public bathhouses: they cost 3 fucking euro. In Finland, the Sosiaali- ja terveysministeriö (department of health) and other entities administer public saunas like Kultuurissauna in Helsinki. Can you believe the 100-1000x markup on these sauna services? We hope the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Diane von Furstenberg, Bjarke Ingels, BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Patient Rights Advocate, Power To The Patients, and others with a vested vested stake in New York City's built environment can join us. We will be pondering koans like the one above, and understanding how to solve the $2 billion dollar opportunity cost that the City of New York and all of us who live here pay in terms of our lost tax dollars due to hospitals being mainly 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations in the city. We will be understanding how to design brand behavioral identities that surround social wellness, and how the financial returns can drive consumer behavior—and consumer activism. Please reach out if you are or represent LPs with 15-year+ time horizons, especially if you want to support low-cost health care delivery and cardiovascular preventative medicine like the sauna (that is a reality in many countries like Estonia, Finland, Japan, Korea, etc, etc.! See saunalist.org for more exemplars.). Best email for resource allocators to learn more: hello@onefact.org.
Healwise is excited to partner with One Fact Foundation (led by Jaan Lı) and Care Culture (led by Toby Shorin) to host the Unconference for Social Wellness next month in NYC! We're creating a space for semi-structured conversation on social wellness and behavioral health by bringing together clinicians, community leaders, business owners, policy makers, and funders. These conversations are critical as we know our traditional mental health system is ill-equipped to meet the demand for behavioral health care. As others players enter the space, we need to consider: ❔ What are "social wellness" and "behavioral health"? ❔ How do we promote and fund innovative and impactful projects? ❔ What does it mean for projects to be community-led? ❔ How do we protect vulnerable consumers? If you've ever pondered these questions, please join us! This event is free and by invitation only. Use the form below 👇 to let us know you're interested in attending. We'll be sending out invites very soon. https://lnkd.in/ehTFsKbt #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth #accesstocare

In today's world, where access to accurate health information can be a game-changer, it's crucial that we come together to uplift and educate our communities. My journey in community health awareness has shown me that knowledge truly is power. Whether it's breaking the stigma around mental health, promoting healthy habits among the youth, or ensuring that everyone has access to essential medical services, our collective efforts make a difference. Today, as I reflect on the impactful health sessions we've conducted—whether it's in schools or out in the field during community outreaches—I am reminded of the incredible resilience and strength within our communities. From educating young girls about menstrual health to offering medical services to underserved populations, every initiative is a step toward a healthier, more informed future. Health isn't just about the absence of illness; it's about fostering a sense of well-being, dignity, and empowerment in every individual. As we continue this journey, let's remember that we all have a role to play. Together, we can conquer stigma, raise awareness, and build healthier, stronger communities. Here's to continuing the work, making every conversation count, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Let's keep pushing forward, one health talk, one outreach, and one person at a time. 💪🌟

Check out the new website for 'Coastal Community & Creative Health', a national partnership to tackle health inequalities in coastal communities in the UK: https://lnkd.in/efnfA3Hd The project, co-led by Prof Lucy Selman & Dr Barbara Mezes, is working across three coastal areas (Blackpool, Hastings and Weston-super-Mare). It will: 🔹 generate evidence and resources to improve mental health across the life-course by enhancing and widening access to community assets. 🔹 result in a model of collaborative working across sectors and with communities, using community assets to tackle inequalities in coastal towns. Anyone interested in collaborating can contact the team via the website.

When men are healthy, we all benefit. We all know the value of our health. But, when it comes to our social discourse and investment in health initiatives, men's health is often overlooked. The research tells us that building men's health literacy and health-seeking behaviours – physical, mental and emotional – has a profound positive impact on all areas of society. That's why we're here. Ahead of this year's Men’s Health Week, Healthy Male and the Western Sydney University Centre for Male Health are teaming up to highlight the importance of men's health through building a fun and accessible social discourse and easy, practical ways to improve health engagement and outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gRBmPgSi

It's been 4 weeks since attending the Decult conference. It's sunk in a little more how impactful it was. A lady on the street approached me as she'd seen me on the news, and asked me for advice regarding her family member affected by the same organisation I was. Some journalists and policy makers are also interested in what insights survivors have to reduce deviance and elevate the health of minority populations. Even at the conference, psychologists who have been in their field for decades were asking me for advice. Me, who has not even started psychological practice yet. Harnessing lived experience of trauma and resilience to help others can be powerful tools - This is generally acceptable in advocacy spaces, but what about elsewhere? There are opinions that it is "unprofessional" in the mental health field for clinicians to share our experiences. For the most part, I do not hold this opinion. Having solid boundaries, recognising the receivers' needs, and sharing with a purpose are some of the many things to implement. Our stories can illicit emotions and meaning within others, which I believe can be weaved throughout professional engagement where appropriate. New Zealand has concerning mental health statistics. One has to wonder if a lack of shared humanity and 'clinical' communication in therapeutic spaces contribute to it. Among other incredible Decult panelists, it was heartening that medical doctor Caroline Ansley and psychologist Maria Esguerra were beside me to advocate for human rights issues and share some of their experiences. We don't have to choose between advocacy and healthcare - We can have both. Our humanity and history are connected to everything we do. Perhaps we can utilise them within healthcare roles. #Professionalsashumans #Intersectionality #DECULT2024
