I am pleased to announce that I will be moderating a panel discussion at the upcoming Ethical Assembly organized by Patricia Imbarus and team on October 3rd, 2024, in Lisbon - representing both AECycle and CERIS Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability. The session, titled "Future Materials: Driving Circularity and Regeneration in Construction," will take place on the Horizon Stage from 11:00 to 11:45. During this discussion, we will delve into the advancements in sustainable materials and their role in promoting circularity within the construction industry. Our panel will explore emerging technologies, such as low-carbon mycelium insulation and eco-friendly building materials, and consider the policy shifts and industry adaptations required to support these innovations. Equally vital measures are the efficient use of resources and reducing operational energy consumption in buildings designed for long-term use. Numerous strategies can reduce a building’s environmental impact. With this June issue, we spotlight six diverse projects that are taking steps towards a climate-neutral future in very different ways. Choosing to move beyond a restrictive mindset, we feature not only urban timber constructions and adaptive reuse with building extensions but also a concrete building and a vacation home in a field. These include two apartment buildings in Barcelona and Eindhoven with low-tech solutions and circular construction. During Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress, I had the pleasure of meeting Piotr Piotrowski, a visionary architect specializing in circular architecture. We engaged in a thought-provoking discussion about the pivotal role architecture plays in making circularity a reality, not just an aspiration. One of the key takeaways from our conversation was the necessity of a holistic approach to transition from linear to circular models. Piotr’s PhD research on ‘Digital Tools for Enhanced Material Reuse’ offers invaluable insights into this transformation. His expertise sheds light on the potential of circular construction to revolutionize our built environment. Consider this: we invest significantly in structures that have a lifespan of 30-50 years, sometimes even longer. Yet, these investments often lock us into unsustainable practices. It’s crucial to deepen our understanding and expertise in this field to ensure that our infrastructure supports sustainability. One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned from the EN-Road climate simulation training by Climate Interactive is the impact of infrastructure lifespan on climate change and sustainability. The insights from experts like Piotr Piotrowski are vital for shaping a sustainable future. Wood Conference 2024 was held in Cape Town a couple weeks back, and "timber and wood construction enthusiast" Jaakko Paloheimo, who works as a Sustainability Manager at UPM Plywood, had an inspiring session titled Responsibility Made Easy at the conference. In his presentation Jaakko talks about responsibility, sustainability and wood construction, and emphasizes, how vital sustainability is in modern wood construction and partnerships. In case you do not have time to watch through Jaakko's whole presentation, here are some highlights of the speech: 💡 Construction industry causes 30-40% of the climate emissions globally 💡 It is our common responsibility to make sustainable decisions 💡 Sustainable and responsible actions need to be at the core of one's business 💡 Sustainability is not only about the environment, but also about social responsibility and governance 🌳 Growing, sustainably managed forests harvest CO2 from the air 🌳 Forests act as a carbon sink and wood as a carbon storage 🌳 Maintaining healthy growth and biodiversity at forests is vital for our future 💚 It is important to know both the origin and environmental impacts of the wood one is using 💚 With the help of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) one can choose a product with the most appropriate environmental impact 💚 Responsibility Made Easy means less risk for our customers, as we, as a material producer, take care of our part of the value chain EPDs are internationally comparable, third-party-approved documents that help building contractors and designers better understand the environmental impact of the products and materials used in their projects. Great to see #Reuse discussed in detail throughout the Architects Climate Action Network Design Guide through all #riba stages. The report outlines the benefit of retaining existing assets, building components and materials at their highest value and maximising opportunities for their future reuse. The Material Index platform allows contractors and project teams to rapidly catalogue materials and building components, promoting reuse on-site with the design team, then off-site reuse through our resale network or donation partners. This can be done as part of a pre-demolition audit for planning or by forward thinking project teams to achieve maximum reuse opportunities.
