Did you know that about one-third of all food produced globally is wasted each year? 😱 That's not just food going to waste, but also the resources used to produce it - water, labor, and energy. By reducing food waste, we can contribute to a more sustainable community and a healthier planet. Here are some simple but effective ways we can make a difference: 1. Plan Meals 📝 - Buy only what you need. 2. Store Properly 🥦 - Keep food fresh longer. 3. Check Dates 📅 - Best before" isn't "bad after. 4. Use Leftovers 👩🍳 - Get creative with extra food. 5. Compost 🌿 - Turn scraps into garden gold. 6. Donate 💖 - Help those in need with excess food. Share your tips and let's make a difference! 🌱💪 #ReduceFoodWaste #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendly #CommunityPower #SaveOurPlanet #theafricanprint #africanprint #kenya #foodwaste

🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery

✨ December is a season of giving ✨ The OFC encourages individuals and organizations to connect with food recovery services to donate food items in good condition. By doing so, we can reduce food waste, support community initiatives, and contribute to immediate food security solutions. Individuals can bring unopened food items to their local food bank (be sure to check if a list of needed items is available to help meet the needs of visitors). Organizations can explore food recovery services in their community, such as Second Harvest, or Too Good To Go to ensure that food is properly redistributed. As part of our latest Symposium (November 2024), Second Harvest discussed the details of their food recovery program. This and other presentations are now available on our Recap webpage https://lnkd.in/g5fqcvW3 For more information on food recovery and other sustainable solutions for food waste, check out our recently published Sustainable Solutions for Food Waste handbook https://lnkd.in/gfdtNChq

#WorldFoodDay Food is culture and identity… and it is too precious to be wasted! This year, the Global initiative is under the theme 'Right to foods for a better life and a better future'. #stopfoodwaste #foodwastereduction #foodwasteawareness #WorldFoodDay2024
Around 132 kilos of food is wasted per person in the EU every year. That's equivalent to 660 apples, 132 bags of sugar, or 330 tins of beans in the bin. On World Food Day, we are focusing on reducing food waste. In March, Parliament proposed different ways to cut down on food waste, such as promoting "ugly" fruits and veggies, keeping an eye on unfair market practices, making "best before dates" easier to understand and donating unsold-but-consumable food.
