Our Men’s Health Hub (part of our Health Champions project) is a voluntary wellbeing session and activity group for residents which meets every fortnight. It not only provides a trusted and confidential space to open-up, talk, and obtain guidance and support, but also enables trained staff and volunteers, many of whom have lived through similar experiences, circumstances and emotions, to offer first-hand advice, understanding, hope (and proof) that things can get better. This, for some volunteers (or champions) prior to themselves being offered Tyne Housing accommodation, includes a history of homelessness or insecure housing which according to national charity, Crisis sees 45% of those experiencing homelessness also being diagnosed with mental health issues. This can be both a cause and/or consequence of, and rises to 8 out of 10 people for those sleeping rough and experiencing insecure housing. I am actively working on a case study impact report highlighting the real life impact of the third sector. Throughout this project, I am conducting interviews with participants from Third Sector organisations that have directly experienced the positive effects of the community's mental health and wellbeing fund. Today I had the privilege of interviewing 7 brave individuals who have suffered from either child sexual abuse, sexual violence or rape. Supported by the charity Talk Now, these participants not only welcomed me into their Talk Now family but opened up and shared their stories, their tears and their laughter. I have heard some truly powerful stories while conducting interviews however sitting with 7 amazing people who all commented that the Talk Now workers saved their lives and in one instance supported the participant in pressing charges and seeing his abuser brought to justice really hit me as to how life changing the work our sector does. The Third Sector is vastly under valued, under funded and under supported I truly hope that the case study report VASLan Third Sector Interface are creating goes somewhere in highlighting this. #casestudy #impactreport #thirdsector #mentalhealth #wellbeing #scottishgovernment #funding #keepthebeatalive

142,490 That's the number of children in England who don't have a secure place to call home right now. And it's 19,000 more than this time last year. This is a housing emergency. The effect that homelessness can have on families, and particularly children, is devastating. The overcrowding, noise, social isolation, and stigma that come with living in temporary accommodation can all have severe and long-lasting effects on the mental health of both the children and the adults who are dealing with it. You can read more in the article below, and it's a topic we also explored in this week's blog, which you can read here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTNkhDPi #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #HousingEmergency #YouthMentalHealth

Together with Dr Miriam Glennie, I am proud to be releasing this needed work exploring rough sleeping in Tasmania. Thank you to all those who participated directly and the many who provided support and engagement along the way. Our hope is that this report helps spur on a Housing First pilot for Tasmania. It is also the case that due to the broadening of rough sleeping across a range of cohorts and the scale of rough sleeping around the state, a Housing First pilot will be just one relevant response to consider. The expansion of specialist outreach and tenancy support services are key broader responses to focus on alongside Housing First which involves the delivery of housing with wrap-around clinical support for those experiencing chronic rough sleeping. It is also our hope that a Housing First pilot can become one leading edge of cross-agency collaboration on rough sleeping involving the Department of Health, Tasmania. Increased provision of healthcare, in particular mental health care, across the homelessness sector in Tasmania is urgently needed. Our thanks to the University of Tasmania which funded this work through the Homelessness ColLAB: https://lnkd.in/gPM6MAWH

Today is World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day. Mental health and stable housing are connected in many ways. Insecure housing can negatively impact someone’s mental health. Mental health issues can also be a contributing factor in forcing people into homelessness. Common mental health problems are over twice as high among people who are homeless compared with the general population. At Fat Macy’s, our trainees receive well being support from their P+E Officers, and have access to free counselling and life coaching. Trainees take the lead on what support they need to reach their goal of stable housing, because we believe they are experts in themselves. However, the journey from temporary accommodation to stable housing remains a challenge for our trainees. There needs to be more safe, secure and affordable housing for all. It is crucial that there is further investment in mental health services, in affordable housing and in homeless services. Alongside Homeless Link and other leading homeless charities in the UK, we have written to the Chancellor to safeguard the sector in the Autumn Budget and commit to review spending on homelessness as part of the upcoming Spending Review. According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, 1 in every 200 Queenslanders is experiencing homelessness. This includes people who are sleeping rough, as well as those who do not have access to stable and standard accommodation. The reasons for homelessness are varied and complex, ranging from mental illness, family and domestic violence, relationship breakdowns to debt, and housing affordability. It is Homelessness Week (5 August to 11 August 2024) – so it's the perfect time to look at these three small actions you can take to help reduce homelessness: 🤝 Support Local Shelters: Donate money, food, clothing, or your time to local shelters and support services. 💬 Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the causes of homelessness and share this knowledge to reduce stigma. ❤️🩹 Support Mental Health Services: Advocate for and support mental health services that provide essential care and assistance.

We know what happens when people are pushed to breaking point, but what will happen if the services that keep them safe and well are too? VCSE mental health services support over 8 million people. Without these vital services, the impact on our communities would be devastating. People would face longer waits for mental health support, putting them at risk of reaching crisis point. An already overstretched NHS would bear the brunt, with more people relying on emergency care. Instead of receiving the community support they need, people may be admitted to acute settings, potentially for longer periods. Please share this and join us in urging the government to make mental health charities exempt from recent Budget changes that threaten their longevity. #TheFinalStraw #MentalHealth #VCSE #Support
