On the unique value of official statistics.
📢 Special theme of the Statistical Journal of the International Association for Official Statistics - IAOS co-edited by statisticians from United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Office for National Statistics: 🎯 Assessing and understanding the value of official statistics 🎯 💬 “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that official statistics are uniquely valuable to society”. So begins the editorial by our Fiona Willis-Núñez and ONS’s Angela Potter, introducing the theme in this September’s issue of the SJIAOS. We official statisticians often take for granted that we produce something valuable to society. We invest time and effort in trying to quantify, prove and communicate this fact. But all too rarely do we reflect on whether it’s true. To do that, we have to explore what ‘value’ even means and ask what kind of value we hope to create. ✅ Do official statistics underpin democracy? Luca Di Gennaro Splendore, Ph.D begins to unpick this oft-repeated claim. 💟 What does it mean for official statistics to promote the public good? Sofi Nickson explains how the UK’s Office for Statistics Regulation is trying to find answers. 📜 What sort of value are national statistical offices trying to add and for whom, according to their official strategies and mission statements? Ken Roy takes us on an international tour. ➡ Can we shift the needle from ‘evidence-based decision-making’ to a more holistic and inclusive perspective? Arman Bidarbakht-Nia thinks we can, and should. Read the papers here: https://lnkd.in/dTHXhMeu Have more to add on this topic? How you use and talk about data is just as important the research itself. An interesting piece by Royal Statistical Society chief executive Sarah Cumbers MSc PhD about enhancing how governments use statistics. Robert Chote, the chair of the UK Statistics Authority says that statistical claims should enhance understanding, rather than being used in a way that could be misleading. We couldn't agree more. It's good to see that transparency, accuracy, and better communication of stats is making headlines. Read more 🔗👇 #DataDriven #MarketResearch #PublicPolicy #DataTransparency

We have been asked by Better Statistics CIC to notify Research Network members as follows: The first Triennial Assembly, as suggested by Professor Denise Lievesley in her review of the UK Statistics Authority, has now been scheduled for the 22nd January 2025, with the remit of “determining the UK’s needs for statistics through a wide consultative process. This should include the private sector, government departments, local government, academia, think tanks and media representatives”. Evidently, a single day does not offer much time to cover the UK’s needs for Statistics in any detail nor does it allow for many contributions from such a diverse public. In the hope of creating some consensus on topics, Better Statistics are scheduling a video conference for 5pm on the 29th October. Meanwhile, please provide your ideas for the discussion by completing this short survey. https://lnkd.in/e9Btgis7 To reserve your place for the 22nd January, please go to Assembly Registration. https://lnkd.in/eqgPFU6S You can also provide your suggestions directly to the Assembly by completing the call for contributions. https://lnkd.in/ecGpw7qq
