Opportunity starts with investing in youth 🌐 Nearly one-quarter of young people in Türkiye are neither engaged in employment, education, or professional training. The ‘Mobile Makers Ateliers’ programme aims to address the challenge of youth unemployment in the country. With workshops held in Kilis and Gaziantep, young participants had the opportunity to develop valuable skills such as digital literacy, analytical thinking, and problem-solving— essential skills for their future employability and growth. In 2024, we were committed to supporting children around the world in gaining access to opportunities. International Day of the Girl Child: Empowering the Next Generation through Digital Learning Today, on International Day of the Girl Child, we shine a spotlight on the power of education to transform lives—especially the lives of girls in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and beyond. Bridging the Digital Divide in South Africa: A Call to Action In South Africa, the digital divide between urban and rural areas is stark and deeply concerning. This gap results in a severe lack of information, resources, and digital literacy among our youth, especially matric learners. In urban centers, students have access to abundant online resources, career information, and educational programs. Meanwhile, in rural areas, many learners struggle to find information about higher education, bursaries, and career opportunities. Some even arrive at university without ever having operated a desktop computer. This digital disparity not only hampers their academic and career prospects but also perpetuates inequality. As we move towards an increasingly digital world, it's imperative that we provide all learners with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. Here's what we can do: - Expand Digital Infrastructure: Invest in reliable internet access and technological resources for rural schools. - Digital Literacy Programs: Implement comprehensive training programs to ensure all students are comfortable and proficient with technology. - Resource Access: Develop platforms and initiatives to provide equal access to information about careers, higher education, and financial aid. ICILS 2023 showed that digital gap remains a major factor affecting students’ computer and information literacy. 🇰🇿Digital gap persists in Kazakhstan among the following categories: 👥boys and girls; 🏫 urban and rural areas; 💳low and high socio-economic status (parental education, parental occupation and number of books at home); 🛜 quality of Internet connection; 🖥️ access to computers at home (+available for schoolwork); 💻 ICT use experience ; 📲 parental limits on screen time. One remarkable NGO working closely towards bridging the digital gap in Kazakhstan is Connect-Ed. They are a group of enthusiastic activists, which aims to achieve digital equality in our country by providing devices for students from distant areas and conducting courses on digital literacy (free of charge!) Based on the ICILS assessment framework and 4 competency levels, Connect-Ed has designed their online courses. At first, children have to take an engaging placement test. According to the results, they will be directed to a respective proficiency level course, filled with interesting video content and useful explanations. It was my honour to be approached by their team to write an expert review for their courses.
