Through our work in the field of #hydropower, we've witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of clean, renewable energy on both local communities and the global environment.   Did you know that hydropower is one of the oldest and most widely-used renewable energy sources? Voith has been a pioneer in hydropower technology for 150 years, with our hydroelectric equipment and services powering countless communities around the globe.   According to an International Energy Agency (IEA) report from 2022, hydropower prevents the emission of about 3 giga tons CO2 per year, which represents about 9% of global annual CO2 emissions. It is a mature technology that contributes to climate change mitigation, and could play an even greater role to tackle climate change.

It's day two at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan and IHA Head of Communications Gemma Regniez MSc, shares what it is like to be on the ground. The atmosphere is gaining momentum in the Blue Zone and at the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) pavilion 🌍🌊 with initial discussions about addressing climate change underway. Global CCS Institute published a report on CCS in Germany's Decaronization pathway. The report reflects the Federal Government’s announcement of 26 February 2024 that unveiled key points of the upcoming and long awaited carbon management strategy, marking a crucial step on the country’s decarbonisation pathway. Main takeaways: ✔ In February 2024, a gradual shift in Germany’s take on carbon capture and storage (CCS) that has been observed since late 2022 culminated in a complete turnaround towards embracing CCS as an indispensable climate mitigation option. ✔ The country’s target of achieving climate neutrality by 2045 has been a critical factor in this shift in approach. CCS is set to play a vital role in the decarbonisation of select industries – e.g., cement, lime, waste incineration – in tandem with renewable electricity, green hydrogen and energy efficiency measures. ✔ The first wave of CCS projects is currently under development. So here are some highlights from the last month! ⚡️ New research shows that 30% of the world's electricity came from renewable sources in 2023, including hydropower, solar, wind, biomass and waste, geothermal, wave, and tidal energy. 🦬 A herd of 170 free-roaming bison reintroduced in Romania’s Țarcu mountains are stimulating plant growth and securing 9.8x more carbon in the soil while grazing. 💨 Climeworks has opened the world’s largest operational direct air capture (DAC) plant in Iceland, with a capacity to capture 36K metric tons of CO₂ per year. 🌊 A global maritime court ruled that greenhouse gases are marine pollution, a major breakthrough for small island states facing global-warming-induced sea level rise. 🛢️ Orphaned oil wells across the United States are leaking hundreds of thousands of metric tons of methane—and now students, nonprofit groups, and others are fundraising to shut them down. ☀️ The USA announces $7B "Solar for All" grants to deliver residential solar, saving low-income Americans $350M annually. 🛻 By 2040, EU nations will mandate a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions from new heavy-duty vehicles, requiring a shift to electric or hydrogen fuel. 🔋 Data shows that Africa has enough hydropower, solar, and wind projects in the works to transition from fossil fuels by 2050, with 76% of its energy coming from renewable sources by 2040.

🇨🇳 China’s effort to build large solar power “bases” in and around the desert is a major part of its current renewable plan. ☀️ What is less known is that the initiative is also a part of China’s campaign to combat desertification, an issue increasingly exacerbated by climate change. 📈 Over the past two years, the programme – described as China’s “war on sand” by the media – has been boosted by the development of large-scale solar bases in far-flung regions, such as Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. 🗣️ One Chinese expert said installing solar panels in the desert can not only generate power, but also help prevent sand dunes from moving.
