The edge of a resected specimen (the 'margin') is a cornerstone concept of cancer care. Here one of our surgical oncologists is painting the cut surfaces of a recently excised soft tissue sarcoma (cytology top left). The ink stays on the tissues throughout fixation (formalin), and trimming, mounting and staining (H&E) of the tissue slide. If the pathologist sees sarcoma cells 'touching' tissue ink, then cancer extended to the specimen margin. Our cancer clinicians will then discuss the findings and present options to the family.
