One week on from TRA 2024 and we are still trying to process everything that happened. We are grateful to the over 4000 delegates who joined us in Dublin to make TRA 2024 unforgettable. One of our highlights was the story of Conall Mac Aongusa, who lost his wallet on the no. 4 Dublin Bus en route to TRA. Driver Robert Dowling found it and personally called to inform him it was at the depot. Unable to retrieve it, as Conall was still at TRA, Robert went above and beyond, delivering it personally to TRA. I’m looking forward to officially start working on the INTERREG E6 project as of next week. Alongside my new Thomas More Research colleagues!! Officially… Because… well, unofficially fomo already kicked in a while ago. And so, I invited myself to the E6 kick-off event which already took place. And so, I immersed myself in ‘all things Circular Economy’ at the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF yesterday. The list is certainly longer, but 3 things which stuck with me: 👉 E6 kick-off: such a diverse, beautiful bunch of highly motivated people I will work with! (evidence in the after-movie Marijke Brants shared; her post also nicely summarizes what E6 is about and which role we will play: go have a look 🙂) 👉 #WCEF2024: legislation, regulations and investments are needed to outline a theoretical path forward. However, collaboration and experimentation in ecosystems are crucial to practically anchor systemic change. We gladly accept that challenge with our E6 project! 👉 #WCEF2024: Winnie Poncelet introduced me to the ‘Theory of Change’, and how putting the desired change center stage will lead the way. It remembered me of one of my favorite quotes ‘fall in love with the problem, not the solution’. Let me reformulate it to ‘fall in love with the change needed to solve the problem, not the solution’. As you can imagine: my expectations are high now. But I’m pretty sure this will be an enjoyable ride 😉.

Ricardo’s First #Certification in #Belgium: The FLIRT International Commuter Train. State-of-the-art international #train operation across three countries. The first Stadler FLIRT trains with ECTS Guardia #signalling system are now in service in Belgium, the #Netherlands and #Germany, as part of a fleet managed by the Dutch operator, Arriva Group. Passengers are now able to transit between Maastricht, Liège and Aachen without transfers. Ricardo Certification was appointed to test and certify the trainsets against Belgium’s applicable #technical requirements, enabling Stadler to attain #homologation for FLIRT in Belgium, a major milestone for running an international commuter service in three countries. FLIRT trainsets were already in operation in Germany and The Netherlands. However, Arriva (based in Limburg) sought to extend service to Liège in Belgium. For Arriva to obtain the necessary homologation for Belgium, Ricardo Certification assessed the compatibility of the FLIRT trainsets with the specifics of the Belgium #infrastructure and Belgian national operating rules. With the passenger traffic continuing to blow past prepandemic levels in Southeast Asia, international airports need to continue to expand capacity and cater for increasing air traffic. This means more efficient traffic operations.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARITIME SAFETY CONFERENCE: Thursday 17th October 2024, Courtyard London Heathrow Airport The UK Chamber of Shipping and Port Skills and Safety are bringing together experts from academia, the automotive, and maritime industries, to discuss the risks and mitigations arising from the increased use of electric vehicles in ports and their carriage on vessels transiting through UK ports. Lithium-ion batteries are increasing used in everyday life, from electric cars to mobility scooters, up to electric tugs and port plant equipment. Whilst the risk of fire associated with their use is not thought to be higher than any other fire risk, the implications of electric battery fires can be far more severe. Dealing with a lithium-ion fire in a port or on a ship presents unique challenges and risks, this conference will discuss those risk and how best to prepare for them.
