Did you know that access to the right data at the right time determines how countries estimate family planning needs? Without appropriate tools, platforms, and networks to make the right decisions at the right time, millions of people who need contraceptives will be left behind. Take Leticia, for example; a shortage of her preferred method of contraception led to consequences that could have been avoided. This is why USAID and GHSC-PSM, in partnership with the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, are working with the Ghana Health Service to transform contraceptive supply chain management in #Ghana using the Global Family Planning Visibility and Analytics Network (VAN). Read Leticia’s story to learn why countries, donors, and supply chain partners must work together to make contraceptives available for all: https://lnkd.in/dAzffH5c #LeaveNoWomanBehind #SupplyChainManagement #FamilyPlanning #ReproductiveHealth #DataVisibility

World Contraception Day 2024: Empowering Choices for a Healthier Ethiopia 🇪🇹 On #WorldContraceptionDay, we highlight the importance of ensuring access to safe and effective contraceptives for everyone in Ethiopia. Access to contraception is not just a health issue; it’s a fundamental right that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. However, conflict and instability in Ethiopia present significant challenges to this right. Displacement, disruptions to healthcare services, and heightened risks of gender-based violence can make it difficult for women and girls to access the reproductive health services they need. In conflict-affected areas, many face the additional challenge of navigating stigma and misinformation, which further hinders their ability to seek contraception and family planning services. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort to ensure that even in the most difficult circumstances, everyone has access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services. By supporting local organizations, training healthcare workers, and advocating for policies that prioritize women’s health and rights, we can make a difference. Let’s continue to advocate for equitable access to contraception and reproductive health services, so that every person in Ethiopia has the opportunity to make informed choices about their health, free from fear and discrimination. #WorldContraceptionDay2024 #SRHR #FamilyPlanning #HealthForAll #GenderEquality #Ethiopia

Happy World Contraception Day A Choice for All: Freedom to Plan, Power to Choose. At ARFH, we are advancing women's health and autonomy through the Community-Oriented DMPA-SC Self-Injection Acceleration in Nigeria (CODSAiN) project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. By expanding access to family planning services including DMPA-SC self-injection, we’re giving women the freedom to manage their reproductive health with greater privacy, convenience, and control. This innovation is aligned with the government’s Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) initiative, ensuring coordinated and integrated health services. ARFH, through the CODSAiN project, is proud to support this vision, working towards a future where self-care options like DMPA-SC Self Injection help women across Nigeria make informed choices about their contraception while reducing unmet family planning needs. Our efforts contribute to increasing the modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (mCPR) nationwide. Additionally, don't miss the opportunity to engage in important conversations about reproductive health at the National Family Planning Conference 2024. Measuring the unmet need for contraception among women in rural areas of Papua New Guinea is crucial for understanding and addressing gaps in family planning services. These regions often experience limited access to healthcare facilities, educational programs, and contraceptive supplies. By conducting surveys and collecting data on contraceptive use, knowledge, and barriers, we can identify specific needs and challenges faced by these women. This information is essential for designing targeted interventions that improve access to and utilization of family planning resources, ultimately enhancing reproductive health and reducing unintended pregnancies. On #WorldContraceptionDay, it is important to address the unmet contraceptive needs of women and girls aged 15 to 49. Countries such as Samoa (28%), Angola (27%), and Liberia (25%) are among the top 10 nations with the highest unmet need for contraception. With seven out of the top 10 countries located in Africa, this highlights the critical need for improved reproductive health services and education across the continent. Globally, 9% of women and girls still have unmet contraceptive needs. #ReproductiveHealth #WorldContraceptionDay #Healthcare #FamilyPlanning #DataAnalysis #Africa

Thanks, Mandana! Lots of things to love about this NYT piece: First, that it acknowledges (albeit glancingly) the importance of sexual pleasure, and how it factors into girls' and women's contraceptive decision-making. Second, that it highlights how little governments are spending to procure contraceptives for their national health programs -- even though having a range of methods available is crucial to helping users make the right choice for themselves. And third, that it calls out so many vital partners in this field -- United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), USAID, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition, MSI Reproductive Choices, and champions like Ayman Abdelmohsen and Anita Zaidi!
Access to contraceptives not only saves lives, but it also transforms them. I am thrilled to see this vital work being highlighted by The New York Times, including the critical role the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has played in striving for universal access to long-acting contraception in Africa. Having been part of this work and witnessing the positive impact on women and communities has been truly inspiring! #genderequality

🌍💡 How does #Contraception & #ReproductiveHealthEducation (RHE) intersect to impacts population health (especially young people's health) ? In #WestAfrica, the intersection of contraception and reproductive health education is essential for improving population health. Addressing the barriers to contraceptive access and ensuring comprehensive reproductive health education for all (especially young people and women) can lead to transformative health outcomes. By tackling the root causes of unmet contraceptive need and expanding RHE, governments and policymakers in the region can reduce maternal mortality, prevent adolescent pregnancies, and contribute to long-term societal and economic growth. On that note, Ghana SRHR Alliance for Young People seeks to convene a regional platform of expertise in a #webinar in commemoration of the World Contraception Day on September 26, 2024. The webinar focuses on raising crucial awareness about the significance of safe and accessible contraception for everyone, irrespective of #gender, #age, or #socioeconomic status. This special day serves as a global call to ensure reproductive health choices for all, empowering individuals to make informed decisions. In November 2022, the global population reached a major milestone of 8 billion. This number continues to rise, with projections estimating around 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050. Interestingly, half of this population growth is concentrated in just nine countries: India, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Uganda, and Indonesia. One key strategy to effectively manage this exponential growth and harness its potential is through comprehensive family planning. Every year, September 26th marks World Contraception Day, a reminder of the importance of family planning. However, some important questions remain: · What are the barriers to utilizing contraception? · How can family planning be accessed, especially in resource-limited settings? · What are the benefits of family planning? These questions and more will be addressed in the upcoming webinar.
